Undercoat my CT conversion project?

Been reading up of course on converting our soon to be delivered 5x8 Homesteader to a basic camper. One Googled forum thread mentioned that trailers get paint chipping underneath and rust, because the undersides are painted after assembly on some, or left unpainted. The spray can undercoating I can buy at auto parts stores is an option I am considering to help prevent this. What say the voices of experience please? Thank you. Don.

I have no actual experience with undercoating my CT other than I have I recently cut a hole through my CT floor to exhaust an a/c unit. To seal it I bought a can of Rustoleum undercoat and some black silicon from from Home Depot. I first applied the silicon to seal off the edges off the cut wood then spayed the Rustoleum undercoat over that, once the silicon cured. Other than that the underside of my CT seems to be well undercoated from the factory. YMMV.

Since your trailer is new, I'd contact the manufacturer to find out their method for undercoating before planning additional work.

I recently inspected the underside of the used Haulmark CT I recently purchased and it was well coated with a black sealant from the factory. While under there I went ahead and sealed all the seams with silicone calking to make myself feel better, but it looked pretty good... a few spiders, but no rust on metal, no bare spots on wood.

I also used the rustoleum can stuff rubber tare in a can. Painted the wood before I installed it and then sprayed it on after it was finished like it and not any on my cloths

Just a word of experiance. I would never use spray can undercoat for anything other than the wood maybe....great for protecting tree's after offing a limb. It just traps moisture and flake's off. How do I know, cause i hate rust with a passion and have tried all sort's of ways to stop it on my truck. I tell ya after year's of restoring car's and trying all the fancy junk out there the thing that works best is a nice fat coat of zinc rich primer followed up with a nice cheap layer of oil/grease. I know it sounds kinda crazy but it works great. My favorite is a bug sprayer filled with WD40 thickened up with motor oil.
