Pinewood cars

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

My daughter does AWANA and they have thier own "grand Prix", almost the same as pinewood derby (same track). She (we) finished fourth overall, not bad considering it was my first time ever, I didn't do it when I was a kid. Awana also does a matchbox race using the same track but running three cars per heat inbetween the pinewood track guides. My son won first place (spray silicon on the axels of the fastest car he had) his car was going so fast that it would hit the folded up comforter at the end of the track and flip up in the air and land on its roof each race.[/img]

Has anyone (I'm sure someone has) built a track? I looked at a good set of plans online and think i could do it. Any advice? One thing im not sure of is the guide, it says use a inch and 3/4 wide lattice. im sure home depot has that. I am hoping to encourage a dad unlimited division to race after the boys.

My dad a couple of years go asked me to make him a car. So i bought the rough out line and then added the hood exhaust to bring the weight up. Also my son did his and got the award for the best use of farm animals. we had a disagreement on the name so his choice on top and mine hidden.

Our pack always has an adult and sibling race. Being a leader, I feel obligated to create the best dang car on the table. A few years back I made a Willys coupe with a flip-flop paint job. Cool as heck but ran like crap since it was my first time. Also did a lowrider truck a few years ago. Didn't have much time for painting so it looked like poo but it only had about 2mm between the rockers and the track. I had to make cutouts in the bumpers for the center rail. It ran awesome. Only reason I got beat was one of the dads nailed a 10" 2x4 to his pine block and called it his 454 big block. No wieght limits on the adult class, lol. This year was a sort of T bucket, can't find pics of it right this sec. I'll try to dig some up though. Here is the one I ran 2 years ago, Model A rat rod. It now resides on my desk @ work.

I use a lot of balsa to do the sides so they look lowered. Next year is our last year for a while so I have to do it up big time. Maybe I'll start more than a day or 2 in advance this time around...maybe not.

I have often thought about building a Sparrow-type car. It is a 3-wheel car that is built on a motorcycle chassis. You just need a motorcycle license to drive one:

I was in Awanas in Indiana over 30 years ago and competed in the Grand Prix. My car wasn't fast but it won a best looking design trophy.
