Okay I give up...........

I have this measuring tape made by Jonson in England. I’ve been using it for a year or so and it has one feature that has been nagging me every time I notice it. There is a symbol on the tape approximately every 19 13/64 inch. It is a triangle which if it were the great pyramid would be inverted with the symbol “T” inside. What the "H" does it represent…?

Larwyn,

This might be the info you are looking for, http://www.asktooltalk.com/home/qanda/f ... easure.htm
It appears that the markings on your tape are for truss work, which would make sense in that the triangle shape represents the shape of a roof truss and has the letter T (truss)in the center.

I've seen those markings on my tapes. My current tape has them as black diamonds. I never knew what they were for. Now I know. Thanks.

They are also for spacing of floor joists. Some of the "I" beam floor joist can be spaced a little wider that the normal 16 inch centers.

Hmmmmm... I have a tape with little diamonds every 40cm (15-3/4") which doesn't match what either of you have said. But, it's a Home Depot tape...

I thought maybe it was to accomodate the studs they sell which bow in & out up to 2 inches. Jeez, you could use some of those things for skis or hocky sticks... :o

Isn't amazing what "box stores" will try to sell..What's worse yet is people that won't cull through and try to find at least a few straight ones.
What really gets me is when we get a couple of bundles from a supplier to frame a house with. We end up with more rockin'chair bottoms than wall studs. O the joy of framing!!
