Building The Atma Travelear Teardrop

Dave,
I ended up making a model (I won't say as good as yours) but inspired by yours!
The beauty of the bent cabinets to me makes the teardrop a piece of art! I apologize that i did not see the form on your build journal...I will take a look for it. I am hopeful that I will be able to integrate some of your beautiful ideas into my build.

I know I'm coming late to this build journal, and its already been said, but WOWZA that full size mock up rocks! I am totally doing that next. I might just end up sleeping in it if I don't stop talking about teardrops around the house; my wife is a little tired of hearing about it! Patience, grasshopper!

Hi Todd, Thank you again for you kind compliments, they are very much appreciated! To be honest, a lot of the great ideas are from other members builds. You owe it to yourself to dig through the build journals and other references. Here's a link to the cabinet thread where I found the curved drawers: http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=12968&start=60 Although my bending form worked pretty well, it was supposed to have a top layer of 1/8" plywood on it to fill in the gaps between the spacers. Without it, your drawer faces might have little flat spots on the back side (and the front darn it). There are so many great ideas and designs here that you can spend days and still see something new. If you can, visit a gathering of Teardrops near you with your wife. It's how actually climbing inside one changes everything. Thanks for the inspiration Dave, I was able to come up with a nice profile by using the pic you posted. mine will be 9'6"L 4'H & 5'W

Hi John, I'm glad it worked out for you sir.

Well kids, this weekend we kicked some butt! The roof is on!

I ended up with 5' wide .063 anodized aluminum for our roof that's a bit over 1/16" thick. We thought it would be pretty hard to make the bend but it worked out well. We did contact cement it to the plywood too.


You can see how rigid the aluminum is sticking out over the galley before trimming.


My doors all contact cemented up ready for trimming.


This dark shot of my brother and I is right after we finished routing the vent opening. He's the one holding the little router. I'll bet we cleaned up about a pound and a half of aluminum sawdust.




Here she is all ready for trim!


And here are the doors all trimmed up too. Now I have to get the hatch aluminum pre-bent and installed.
