Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

ordered a 7X12 make that a 7X14 cargo trailer

Postby pete42 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 10:37 am

Well I did it after looking at 4-5 trailers big ones small ones and a cargo Trailer.
last night I thought I had found my ideal cargo trailer it sounded good untill I
had a chance to check it out. $6100 was price.
the owner had added a 15,500 BTU AC unit couple of 4 foot lights and a 100 amp breaker box and a 50 amp cord.
sounds good untill you saw how he added the breaker panel and cord,
he made his own power cord by hooking two male 50 amp plugs onto a nice heavy cord and having a female socket
on the trailer feeding the breaker panel.
If he would happen to plug the cord into a 50 amp campground pedistal before he pluged it into the camper
the other end with the other male end would be hot with electricity
a very dangerous thing someone could die if they touched the plug.
so I decided to order a cargo trailer from R-N-R trailersin Michigan
all aluminum only thing I need to do is insulate I ordered
4 corner jacks, AC UNIT, brakes, rv door with screen, two 22X30 windows, awning, entrance step, plus the things
that comes standard. price is about $500 more $6599 than the above cargo trailer but everything will be good to go.
I will need to insulate my brother said he would help.
now I need to learn how to post pictures.

please tell me I din't mess up.................... :frightened:

I'm glad you trusted your instincts and passed on the trailer with the faulty wiring. Confidence is worth the extra money!

Really sounds nice, Pete. I think that you made a good call on passing up the other trailer. If he had installed the shore power like that, I would wonder what else he did or didn't do. Besides, $500 is not that much for the peace of mind of having a new trailer with everything under warranty. I hope you enjoy it.

Congratulations Pete! You definitely made the right decision to stay away from that used trailer. Now you have the hardest part - Waiting!

Sounds like you will be all ready to go once you get it insulated and get the interior the way you want it. Yours is "fully loaded" Good job! :applause:

Can't wait to see the pictures. :pictures:

I agree with Pat. No telling what else he did. Accident waiting to happen. Good call.

Hey Pete

Posting pictures here IMHO is sorta a pain in the BUTT , :x :x :?
First you gotta shrink them down to below 500 kb each

Then you have to post them to your personal album & from there
Copy the link into your post ..........Grrrrrrrrrrr
You seam to need to do this one picture at a time.......... double Grrrrrrrrr

On my blog I just select all 10 pictures & bingo they are posted

Or you can post them on the web & then post that link into your post......

I wish I could just import pictures direct - into this form to bypass the album,
We would get lot more pictures here :pictures: :pictures:

Maybe others can give you some more tips on the subject :worship:
It's very frustrating to me

Pete good too hear,, For the pictures go to photobucket.com Sign up for a free account. Its as easy as it gets for posting pictures.. You click upload picks. Then click the picture. Then click upload.. Once done it will show you several links for your pictures. One of them is for posting in forums and already has the .img tags.. Click the link and its copied to your computer, just go to your post and click paste. (Ctrl+V) or right click and click paste. I've used it for a very long time and its about the easiest way to share pictures online.. No resizing or anything.. It also works well sharing photos with family. Upload them once to an album then just share the link with several others or on facebook. Much easier then emailing pictures.

Congratulations Pete! :applause:

Glad you got a trailer in the works.

We will have to get together someday when you get your trailer since we're almost neighbors.

Pete,
For my td build I used the personal album here but for my ct conversion I started a blog. Just used Google and it's easy to post pictures and then a write up. Then I just cut and past the blog link to my posts here.

Pete, Congratulations. And yes a dangerous installation, likely to shock somebody sooner or later. I installed a Marinco waterproof plug on my 50A cord at the camper. They make a 30A also. See http://www.marinco.com/productline/rv-power-conversion-kits. I think this is better than using NEMA connectors (TT30 or 14-50), which are hard to find in recessed male configurations anyway.

I use photobucket.com for pictures. I copy the url of the large sized image into IMG tags on this site. Right click "Copy Image Location" on firefox.

Thanks for encourging words
I made a chaulk outline on the rear garage's floor 12' X 6'6" with a V added to one end
I then placed some of the items I already have futon, microwave, hot plate, porta-potty, folding table,
12 foot did not leave me much room for the two mobility scooters we use
so I spent more money and changed my ordered to a 7X14 foot trailer.
I'm sure when I go alone the 12 footer would have been big enought but the times when the GF can go it may have been to small.
it's only money I want to be able to stop on the way somewhere spend the night and keep the scooters inside where they will be safe.
trailer is suppose to be ready for pickup Aug 29 we leave Aug 30 at 4pm for williamsburg, Va.
that's cutting it closer than I like I hope it's ready.

Pete,

I'm very happy for you and your new CT. You provided a lot of inspiration for others. I appreciate your discussion on laying out what you want in the CT and then finding out you needed an extra 2 feet.

Take care,
Tom

Well done on laying it out. I did basically the same thing except I used Google sketchup. Free graphics program from Google. Its always good to measure twice cut once!!
