Four states, 1900 miles and no teardrops!

Postby GuitarPhotog » Sat Aug 04, 2012 10:22 pm

I'm back from my tour of central Oregon's "Volcanic Legacy." I drove 1900 miles, mostly in Oregon and No. Calif. on interstates, state highways, county roads, and city streets and did not see another teardrop trailer.

I saw a bazillion pop-up tent trailers, a few Chalets, a couple of T@Bs, but not a single teardrop. I realize that some of my trip coincided with the IRG gathering on the northern Calif coast, but I expected to cross paths with someone coming or going, or even parked in a rest stop.

You can read about my travels to Shasta Lake, Crater Lake, East Lake, and points beyond on my teardrop trailer blog.

We only saw a couple on our longer trip, but most of the camp grounds had a clue and most had had some one this year in one.

I'm really suprised you didn't see more. I thought they would be very popular in that part of the world. I live in rural MS about 1 mile from the entrance of a state park (it's not overly large holding maybe 50-75 campers at once) and I see one on average about every 2 weeks and I assume I miss a lot of them if I don't happen to be outside. About a month ago I saw a jeep pulling a pair of them at once. Two years ago was my last trip out west and I stayed in and around the Tetons with trips out thru Yellowstone (I stayed mostly in the Bridger Teton Natinal Forest and not the NP themselves) and saw quite a few for the month I was out there.

We saw only two teardrops on a trip from Wisconsin to Branson and back this past spring. My wife asked if teardrops are afraid to be out alone as we mostly see them at gatherings. :?

I gave lots of tours, and talked to lots of people about my teardrop but didn't see another. The lady in the Winnemucca NV RV Park said she sees 4 or 5 stay with her every summer, but only one at a time, and no others while I was there.

On my last trip, to San Luis Obispo, I saw another tear in a rest stop and one passed northbound while I was stopped for lunch. So, maybe they're more common along the coast?

I saw one last year coming from Vegas. It was "the lite house" had a decal of a regular light house.

The round trip to IRG covered about 2200 miles. Saw only one teardrop that was not with the IRG punch, and they looked like they were leaving the campground around Lassen last Sunday afternoon. I have only seen one tear since I moved into the Salt Lake area in the last 8 month. So I think we are still a pretty elite group of campers. :applause: 8)

I recently took a trip to Montana and saw a few near Glacier National Park. One pulled into a gas station in Browning, MT while I was getting gas. Saw a couple of others at campgrounds or pull offs along highway 2 between Browning and West Glacier. I can't remember if there were any others on my 3500 mile trip. Most of what I saw looked like homemade teardrops. Since I was pulling my homemade TTT, I was happy to see 2 Casitas and 1 Scamp. Their size was the inspiration for me building my own small travel trailer.

I saw about 4 during a 10-day camping trip through the lower peninsula of Michigan, covering about 1500 miles. Teardrops do seem the rarest of the towed type RVs.

Hey Chas
(aka the Dam Red Ale brewmeister  )

Sounds like you had a real nice trip, even tho you didn't see any fellow teardroppers. Glad you got to explore Newberry Crater....Elaine and I were there (East Lake) a few years ago and loved it....want to go back soon. It's one of those hidden gems off the main road that lots of folks miss.

Maybe we'll see you next Dam gathering?

Happy trails,
Rich

Another 250 miles an no teardrops, either.

Rich, where did you stay at East Lake? I stayed at the East Lake Resort RV Park, which was marginally OK. I'd entertain suggestions for alternatives (there seem to be a lot of US Forest Service?? campgrounds around there) for my next trip through that area.

Hope to see you at the DAM Gathering next year. And yes, I'll bring more beer next time :)

Take care

Charlie,

We were up there a few years ago, before we had the trailer. We took our boat up there and stayed at East Lake Resort in one of their cabins.
The 'beach' on the west side of East Lake was strewn with obsidian fragments and there was even a small hot spring along one part of the shoreline.
We enjoyed our stay up there a lot. As far as campgrounds, the only ones I know of inside the Newberry Volcanic Monument itself are the one you stayed at and Little Crater campground on the south shore at Paulina Lake.

Cheers,
Rich

We travelled over 2500 miles before seeing our first teardrop about a mile away from a Tincan Tourist campout at the Gilmore Museum.
Ran into the UP Michigan Crawl at Indian Lake. Nice group there....... but nothing over the last 1200 miles since then,
Thousands of bikes though as we approach Sturgis.
