Power Center Hissing

Postby MelAmes » Fri Aug 10, 2012 12:00 pm

Hi all...I built a 6x12 camper (based on many builds here) and wanted to use parts from an older camper I had. So I installed a very old Centurion CS4500 series power center (converter) that hisses when I turn on anything DC. It also dims when I turn on more than a couple lights. ...maybe its time to replace the 1980 power center. :( I thought it might be the grounding so I re-ran the ground lines but it still does it.

Anyone have this experience? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

More than likely your caps or rectifiers on that power board are going bad. Also the information i read says that the transisters on that liked to blow. Replacement board is running in the 180's. I love fixing stuff like that so if it was me i would take out all the old componets and then replace with mil spec. thats just me although you can get a GD for in the low 100's

The old power centers are not as smart as their newer counterparts. Progressive Dynamics makes a replacement power unit you may be able to slip in and it will be much kinder to your battery.

That is kinda what I thought but wanted educated opinions since I'm a newbie to this stuff. Thanks for your feedback! I ordered a WFCO WF8965 power center so we'll be back in business very soon.

The WAFCO power products are known for problems, do a search. I have seen numerous complaints in other forums. That is why I recommended the Progressive Dynamics.
