Camping with your dog(s)?

Postby KristyG5 » Wed Aug 15, 2012 11:24 am

Our thirteen year old, terribly anti-social, bad traveler, crotchety old dog passed away a few weeks ago. Our family of three (me, husband, three year old) fill out the inside of our tear nicely, but we've been talking about adding another dog to our family. I would want to bring said dog camping and not bother with dog sitters/boarding, but there's positively no room inside the trailer for one. Would a crate in the dressing tent attached to the trailer be a terrible idea? How do you all camp with your dogs? I grew up camping, but not with any family pets, so I can't call on my own experiences here. I'd love to hear anything/everything about camping with your family dog.

Well we just make room. After all she is just one of the kids.

She is a great raccoon deturant as well

You could build him/her their own teardrop.

Only problem with this idea was that Sadie found out WE had heat and she wanted in where it was warm.

If your dog is crate trained, then there's no reason they can't stay in the crate at your campsite.

But, if it's not crate trained, and not used to being out of your sight, then it's not fair to the dog or to other campers (dog crying, whimpering, barking, etc.).

Sunny Day only weighs 11 lbs and she is quite comfy in the tear drop--at my feet, next to me, where ever she wants!!!!

We have a small tent that our 80lb lab's crate just barely fits inside, so she gets locked inside both whenever its not appropriate for her to be on a 25' wire. Her personality is also very laid back and quiet, so she just sits inside and watches everyone through the windows without barking, while we get to sleep without her snoring bothering us.

I think it would be great if you can bring your dog so it, and you can enjoy the experience together, as long as you both consider the other campers.

We just spent several days camping and had a "nice" couple leave their dog in the trailer while they went boating (all day, 9hours) while fido barked and carried on in the locked trailer...

I wouldn't mind having you and your dog as neighbors!

Maybe a practice run would be a good idea?
Having the dog in a crate, in a tent, away from you might leave the dog scared or insecure...concerned with every unfamiliar sound? (bark, bark)

Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...

Why can't somebody breed 40 pound Labs??

My 80 pound Lab was not behaving well when I left him tied to the trailer. I want to go to bluegrass festivals and most don't let dogs in the audience area. So, I found that if I ran him till his heart burst :) and got him good and exhausted, he behaved while I was gone. A big bone helps too.

I share the bed with him at night. I park so his side of the trailer is a bit lower than my side. That way, the "creeping" is kind of controlled.

I wonder if I could control the "creeping" of an 11 lb Shih Tzu???? I never have figured out how she gets 2/3 rds of the bed and I get the edge  :x

No dog - but the cat and I share a bed. He has his side and I have mine. At 19 lbs he takes up quite a bit of it, and even tries to head-butt me out of bed when he's decided I've had enough sleep and it's time to feed him! Fortunately for my camping sanity he HATES to travel, so stays home with a cat-sitter and I finally get uninterrupted sleep. Maybe that's why I like camping so much!!

We took our Daisy to the IRG this year. Tyler is 7 but sleeps all over the place. Daisy slept at his feet. She would have no part of sleeping in the truck or outside even if the weather was good. I kept her on leash while she was outside and walked her often. She did fine although she has issues with spotted dogs of all sizes. No problem with people though she just loves to get attention.

The Command post will have a queen sized bed when it's done. Plenty of room for the dog to curl up on the fot of the bed between our feet :)

Camping can be a load of fun with your dog, however the wilderness isn't always to kind and can hold surprises, when camping with your pooch you should be ready before and when you go camping. Before hand think about Vaccinations and License, Know Your Dog and Physical Demands.

Life is so much easier when you DON"T have a dog with you on vacation, or even at home for that matter.
You will find you have more friends when you don't have a dog. Something like being a Smoker?? People won't shun you.
Smokers don't even realize they are being shunned though??????
Camping with a dog is a good way to have privacy, as most people won't choose to camp next to you unless they have no other choice, and don't sit up and waiting for people to drop in to visit.
Please don't take me wrong....I do LOVE dogs! Just can't bring myself to sacrificing my freedom and my lifestyle to keep my pet from getting pis...d off at me and eating my furniture or the upholstry in my car. And I just can't afford the $86,000 the average pet costs over your life time.
I also love pigs, lamas, and monkeys....but would never consider taking one camping!
And having your animal sleeping with you in a teardrop!!! Are you kidding???
We know one thing that isn't happening in that teardrop!

We have one and she loves to go camping sleeps threw the night with out going for walk but the second I get up out she goes and she likes to be involved with everything. when I'm cooking she's right there hoping i'll drop stuff but we don't feed her from table, but if it hits the ground she has it and gone. We have a kentle for her about 5'x5' with astroturf we put her in there when she starts getting in our way of walking. I take her on lots of walks around camp grounds [cause I'm nosey]
