Can 2006 BMW 325I tow a 840lb teartop?

Postby eresan » Wed Aug 15, 2012 1:15 am

Hi everyone here!

im thinking to buy a teartop! Already shopped around found the teartop I want, but I looked everywhere online and in store. I can't find a hitch for my 2006 BMW 325I Sedan! They just don't make the hitch for my car model. I talked to BMW dealer they just told me they don't recommend to tow, not helpful at all. This car has a 6 cylinder 3.0L engine, the manual book says rear axel capacity is 2450LB. The hitch stores around me said I can probably find a fabricate store to make a custom hitch, is that safe to do? Is this car able to tow??

I also have a 2004 mazda 3s 5door hatchback. The manual book simply says don't tow a trailer, but the hitch shops do have the hitch for my car model to install. I can't decide which car to use to tow a teardrop, or just don't buy a teardrop.

Any advise is much appreciated.

I found this -

http://www.autoanything.com/towing/73A3874A0A0.aspx

Says it will fit the 325xi - not your model, but not sure the rear structure is any different than the 325i. You'll have to download the manual and look under your car to be sure.

You car should be able to handle a trailer that light - I tow a 1100 lbs teardrop with a Miata, so I can't imagine you'd have a problem.

Good luck!

As an ex U=Haul center manager I can guarantee that Drawtite will custom build a hitch for almost anything that has anykind of a frame or unibody. I custom ordered for my 2005 Scion xb ( not rated to tow) and my 2000 suzuki Esteem ( not rated to tow ) . They are about 50 dollars more custom built but they are designed and engineered for THAT vehicle. Drawtite will actually hunt down someone with that model and borrow it to design the hitch specs and then add it to their product line.

Wow Crasher

I had a 95 Melot, but my tear only weighed 580lbs. I now have a Mazda3, but havnt gotten the hitch installed yet. To the OP have you checked etrailer.com?
Wheather you think you can or you think you can't, your right.
