Newbie from PA going to be from SOCAL

Postby El Duderino » Wed Aug 15, 2012 11:38 pm

Greetings Everyone,

I'm The Dude, so that's what you call me. You know, that or ah his Dudeness, or uh Duder or uh El Duderino if you're not into that whole brevity thing. If you are into the brevity thing you can just call me Ed.

So I'm on a bit of a mission here... I want to build a TTT for a trip / move to Southern California (Actually, I'm dying to go to a In-n-Out Burger). I'm on a bit of a time crunch to get this done, so I've been studying the forum like a crazed maniac. I just went out tonight and bought the 4x8 1720# HF Trailer and now it's time to make a decision about style, construction material, etc and then kick this into high gear. Thinking this is going to be a bit tricky... Needs to be lightweight, capable of enclosing my motorcycle and when not enclosing the motorcycle needs to provide reasonable accommodations for two adults and one teenager. I'd also like to be able to have it so that I could disassemble the whole thing so that it could be put into storage when i'm not going to be traveling.

Anyway, I'm going to say thanks in advance for all of the really great info that this extremely talented group of people has posted. It's been a ton of help already. I usually do my due diligence searching and researching, but I'm probably going to have to jump right into some questions because of the limited time that I have.

Abidingly,

All I can say is
Also there are like 15 in n out burgers now in utah, in fact i shall have a double double animal sytle with animal fries, with lemonup later today.
Ok when you say disassemble for storage are you thinking like 6 panels you put under the crawlsspace and when going camping you pullthem out assemble in 30 minutes and off you go. tears or tiny travel trailer store easy enough that i dont think dissasembly is necessary
There are several trailer that can have cargo and one i saw had a motorcyle. a build like that would be easiest without a galley just a sleeping area and it would allow for 3 people eay enought.

Wow, quite a list. Everything, but the knock down idea, seems very doable.
Now I'm thinking of lunch. Always been and old fashioned guy. Double Double, fries and a vanilla shake..........sometimes an extra shake for the road.

Dudest of dudes: You sound like you need a slide-on camper for your Harbor Freight special. Not only that, but going fully modular with your trailer setup to return it to bike trailer after you've removed your camper.

If you want your bike IN the camper, might I recommend that you make the front of the camper lift similarly to the galley so that you can use the tongue as the ramp (provided that you bolt or weld on an actual tread for the bike to roll down). This will also give you the option to use canvas to increase the interior space of your camping area in fair weather. Just ensure that you use chocks and at least one jack at the back.

Forrest, Sounds Good to Me! ...and apparently Utah is a more progressive state then Pennsylvania.

Not thinking of being able to put it in a crawl space but perhaps in a garage or storage unit.

Thank you, I found those during a search earlier and so they seem to demonstrate the idea is feasible.

Carl, Yes the knockdown idea might be the more difficult aspect. I think the most difficult part would be making it so that it doesn't leak like a sieve.

Ughhhh, What kind of a society is this where "thinking of Lunch" puts you in the "old fashioned" category? Be proud Carl and enjoy it! (especially the extra shake)

Hi Driver, Yes I'm really wanting to go with the bike in the camper and then remove the bike when sleep must take place, etc. Return bike to the inside when time to move on. That's an interesting idea of the front tongue ramp. I'll have to explore that idea some more, that might save some weight.

IMHO In & Out is highly overrated. Fried cheap meat patties and the rest is nothing to write home about. The French Fries are cooked once in oil that is too hot. French Fries (IMHO) should be first cooked in cooler oil to actually do most of the cooking, and then briefly cooked in hotter oil to crisp the outside.

I like Red Robin (granted a sit down place versus fast food) hamburgers and their "endless supply of steakfries" and their "bottomless" root beer floats.

I'd rethink moving to So. Cal. There are already too many "rats in the cage" (one of the two things I learned in college psychology is that the more rats you put in the cage, the more aggressive they become). Housing is expensive, freeways are congested (spent 6 hours on the road in LA yesterday, taxes are high, etc, etc, etc. My #2 son just moved to Colorado and doesn't plan on returning. The weather here is, IMHO, tough to beat.

Good luck though.

Cheers,

Gus
