Trailer Plan

Postby excel12 » Sun Aug 19, 2012 5:25 pm

Newbie looking for help building a 5x10 or 6x10 trailer to tow behind my 1995 Toyota Tacoma 4 Cyl PU. I use AUTOCAD and would like to start by building my own trailer by welding the frame from scratch. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I'd say the first thing you want to do is determine if you are building a big teardrop, or a standy travel trailer. If I woke up in your shoes, I'd look through the Hall of Fame and see what sorts of designs grab your attention. I'm building a customized version of Dale Summer's Squidget. http://www.tnttt.com/gallery/image.php?image_id=85372 Get a feel for how much room you want, and what sort of features you want. Like for example, to sink or not to sink? RV toilet with a holding tank in a real bathroom, portapotty, or use campground facilities? If you decide to do a full-on RV bathroom, look at StandupGuy's build. http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=43655 Once you define exactly what you are building, chances are, somebody has already built something similar, and their build journel will let you learn from their mistakes and cut down on your own

Best of luck!

totally agree look in the hall of fame and see what style you like and whatnot. i did a 5x10 and like you did it from the frame up. i had some skills but this has taught me so much and dont be afraid to ask questions we have the answers. alot of questions to ask on things you want and you need it light. for light you can go with 1/2 inch interior and 1/8th inch exterior and depending on your profile 2 layers of 1/8th inch for the roof. also look at the electrical and what you want and plan on putting in there. i went with a 2x2 1/4 inch thick steel frame way more than you need. i am currently designing or running the numbers for a thinner walled and rectangle cross section of a fram maybe 1 inch or 3/4 inch to 1-1/4 tall. i would recommend paying for teh premade doors so much simpler IMHO. also use 1x2 poplar for your roof spars JAO. good luck
