Northern Tool trailer modifications

Postby Howego » Tue Aug 21, 2012 6:32 am

Does the Northern Tool 5x8 trailer width have to be shortened so the sides will overlap it for overall 5' width? What other modifications have members made to their Northern Tool trailer? Thanks for any input. Jim

That's a tough question with a dozen answers. Why not just keep it 5' wide on the inside so you can have a standard size queen size mattress? If you want to go 5' on the outside, but have your sidewalls cover the frame, then either need to shorten the frame cross members based on the thickness of your outside walls, or build with the outside face of the side walls resting even with the edges of your frame, and then do some sort of skirting to hide the frame. You might want to check out the wall attachment thread (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=19442&hilit=wall+attachment ) because that will have a big impact on your dimensions for the rest of your build.

Which Northern Tool 5x8 are you using? They have a bolt-together kit, and a welded trailer.

If you are using the welded trailer, people have modified the tongue by adding steel diagonally from the coupler to create an A-frame. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=22538

If you're using the bolt-together kit, you might consider extending the tongue - best modification I've ever done! The process should be just about identical to extending the tongue on the HF kit. viewtopic.php?p=854558#p854558
