New tear build in Victoria, BC

Hi,

I'm Derek. I've done a bit of boatbuilding and built a big geodesic dome, and seem to like living in rounded structures, so what better than a teardrop for my road trips!

I've picked up a trailer and doors and a Kuffel Comet planbook from someone who intended to build this camper, but somehow lost steam along the way.

It won't be exactly a Kuffel Comet, though, because the first thing I realized when I got the trailer home is that it's not comet sized! Instead of being 47"x115" it's 55"x96". I have a funny feeling the that 8 inches is going to cause me no end of grief with extra scarf joints and changed calculations. But that's what I've got! And the trailer looks good, so I don't want to dig back into that and change it... I wonder if it makes sense to extend my floor out beyond the back of the metal frame. I think the floor would be strong enough, but then I guess I'd be in the position of having to scarf together pieces on both length and width! Probably easier to just re-design.

I also bought Steve Frederick's shop manual as soon as I realized the Kuffel plans were only going to be a guide.

I have a shed full of cedar strips from some kayak building plans that got set aside, so I intend to strip the outside.

I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions for the forum as time goes on! And if any of you are in the Victoria area, come on out and watch the fun! I'm building this at a hackerspace I helped found, http://victoria.makerspace.ca, so plenty of tools and interested folks to help out.

Thanks!

Hey Derek,

Finally, the excuse I need to go and check out the Makerspace. :)
If you'd like to examine either of my home built trailers feel free to PM me.
