HG 1740# bolt together floor question

Postby Riptide » Tue Aug 28, 2012 11:50 pm

I have measured and cut my floor but as is, it will sit on the bolt heads that hold the trailer together. I am thinking I should put down wood strips for the floor to rest on. Only other way I can think of to do this is to cut divots into the 3/4 plywood, but am reluctant to just hack divots in the face that sits on the rails. Just looking to find out how others have dealt with this issue.

When I am building with wood I tend to think about it a lot and then just have at it. My last project was a marble top wood case for my computer and that turned out marvelously.

Thanks,
Kerry

FOAM !

Lay in a layer of 1/2 to 3/4 blue foam on the frame then your floor. The bolt head will compress the foam where needed. You now have a water resistant membrane and the plus of having an insulated floor.
Growing older but not up !

Dry fit your plywood to the trailer frame. Take a heavy mallet or hammer and tap pretty hard directly over each bolt head. That will leave a dent in the wood at each bolt head. Take a wood drill bit and counterbore the dent just enough accommodate the bolt head (don't need to drill all the way through). If you are concerned about the 1/8" gap caused by the overlap of the channels, you can fill that with a wood shim. Check my journal (weekender) for pics of how I worked these issues.

I can tell it was late when I posted HG (Home and Garden? ) should have been NT!

Thanks for the replies! While I am going to insulate the floor I will likely drop some quarter inch wood on the rails for spacing above the bolts (I am likely to crank down the torque too much when bolting for the blue foam to survive). This build is going to be done similar to the boat that is next on my list of "I want to builds"...
