Newbie from Roswell, Ga.

Postby kookenotes » Tue Sep 11, 2012 9:23 pm

Hey folks,
I am a retired sales manager from the Forrest Products Industry and have been an outdoorsman all my life. When I retired, I began to do most of my camping out of a little BMW convertible; one small step up from a backpack as far as volume is concerned. On a trip across the "Blue Ridge Parkway" I saw a couple of teardrops and figured that was the perfect solution to my dilemma. After thinking about it for a couple of years, I finally bought a set of plans on the internet and about a week later I discovered this web site. I have been lurking in the background for the past month reading the posts and gaining a wealth of information from the members of this forum. The residual knowledge of this group and the innovation employed in many of the builds has really impressed me. I discovered the free generic BenRoy plans on the site and realized that the set I had purchased appeared to be partial copies of the same plans so, using the more complete plans from TNTTT, I began my build about mid August. I am building an oak "woodie" and have just finished installing the profile walls and am beginning on the cabinetry. I just wanted to give a loud shout out :wine:  thank you for all the help that I have found in these threads. This group is the best  . I will figure how to get some pictures on the site soon. My goal is to have it completed by the end of September so I can use it for the Fall foliage season and the hunting season :) . The great thing about living in the Southeast is that I can utilize my new toy year round. I already have most of the vintage toys - Coleman cooler, multiple lanterns and stoves, and a full compliment of cast iron cookware 8) . I found a new reason to get out of the recliner and feel right at home on this site. You folks have led me astray. Thank you.

Welcome from over in Jefferson, GA to the madness! I'm getting closer to having mine campable and we're headed to a tearjerker gathering up at Cloudland Canyon state park here in GA this weekend, all are welcome to join and you can even come by and see some of the tears and TT from here in GA, TN and maybe an AL or 2. Hope to meet you camping sometime and good luck.

Cliff

Thanks for the welcome Cliff. I will definitely be attending some of the local gatherings as soon as I get it completed (or close to completed). Cloudland canyon is a pretty area and should be a great outing. How many are expected to attend? I'm also looking for a great campground to make sure my wife's first experience is an excellent one :wine: . If you have any suggestions I would welcome them. Bill

Welcome aboard, Bill, you have come to the right place. You mentioned that you are building a woody, good for you, I can relate to that. What kind of finish do you plan to apply to the exterior? You might get a bit of rain down your way. Moisture is the greatest enemy to our camping rigs, so I do hope you prepare for it properly. Post those pics, we all love pics. Good luck on your build, and do try to make it to some gatherings, whether large or small, the folks are really friendly and will help you beyond measure.

Hi Roly and thanks. I have followed a number of your posts and I'm sure impressed with your rig. Aside from covering the roof and hatch with aluminum, I haven't worked out all the details on the exterior finish. My initial thoughts were many coats of Marine Spar Varnish but I would sure welcome any advice or suggestions. I am blessed ( or cursed) with a five car garage. Two of the bays are double deep so my TD will always be inside except when in use, but I still want to take every precaution I can in the prep and finish. I read someone's post, perhaps yours, that it was a good idea to camphor the trim to be sure it doesn't hold water. I have the time and tools to do it right. Now I need to see if I have the skills to end up with something half as nice looking as yours  . Thanks again for the welcome aboard. We left the Bay Area in 1989 and are always looking for excuses to visit that beautiful state. Perhaps I will have the pleasure of meeting you at one of the West's gatherings. :wine: 8) .

10-12 so maybe up to 1-20 people and others may just come and drop in Saturday! Most of the state parks in GA are really nice especially with bath rooms and showers. Most of the NGA are nice but hard to get inot early fall due to people coming to watch the leaves fall. Well get 'r done so y'all can go camping!

Thanks for the Information Cliff. My target date is to be finished or completed enough to camp by the last week-end in Sept. I thought I might try Amnicolola Falls but it sounds like I might have problems finding a spot there. Hope to see you at one of these campgrounds. Have you had any experience with Table Rock State Park over in SC?

I have. Table Rock is a nice park, and well worth checking out. Welcome, by the way.

Cliff

I love private campgrounds. They are a bit friendlier than some of the 'big boys'.
