Could we put on, " A TV Show all About TD Trailers ?"

Postby Martinup » Mon Jul 02, 2012 10:06 pm

Hi everyone:

Is it me or as I get older TV just doesn't do it for me . . . TOO much uninteresting or too many repeated themes or I don't know what but it just seems Less. Do you tire of some of these reality TV shows?

I for one wouldn't mind following a whole show devoted to: " The many aspects of, Tear Drop Land . " How about you?

Throw out your thoughts on how perhaps 1 Hour Show would look like and what could we do with it? We could highlight build journals, Profesional suppliers like, "Dexter or pro Welding shops . . . perhaps Enginneers and Architects . . . Devote segmants to Gatherings Etc. Thelist is long and would never need to be boring.

Ordinary folks sharing extordinary acomplishments in their lives on TV in a reality show. The set would always be dynamic and as wonderfull as your garage or backyard building spot.

Who Knows perhaps someone knows people in the TV bizz able to introduce the idea. If not we all have Camcorders and it is getting easier to self sponsor suach an idea. This would be such a refreshing reality TV show.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Food for thought,

That would be cool, but... I heard of one show that 2 guys go around and buy cars (mostly Mopars)and fix them up and sell them, they produced a pilot and no netwroks would touch it, they finally asked why. They were told that there wasn't enough drama, and nobody wants to watch someone just fix cars, so they rewrote it and scripted in drama and Velocity picked it up. Just last night I was wondering why I waste my time watching TV as it seems that it is pretty much the same thing on every channel.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

TV is dead, for us anyway.

About a year ago, our family 'cut' the cord. We were spending in excess of $150 a month for basic cable, internet, phone, etc. That is not even a single 'premium' channel.

In our desire to try to cut costs and put the little money we have into things that are good for our family, we decided that we would keep only our broadband and subscribe to Netflix. We added an Apple TV so that we could stream various programs, etc.

I never watched TV much anyway, but now, when i want to watch something, I have to be pretty deliberate. I love documentaries. Netflix is great for that. If you are looking for recent films, or even TV shows, Hulu Plus is better, but for us it does not stream to our Apple TV (something to consider if you need the most recent "Project Runway" or other show...) Instead, we watch this on our beautiful Mac computer screen.

There are certainly some downsides. We don't get to watch the Olympics because you have to have a cable subscription in order to stream stuff. You don't 'get' to watch local news, and so on. However, if you add in how much we save a month, listen to NPR, read the New York Times, or other online news, you get your fill.

We've found that RedBox has great new movies. So does our library, and they are free to borrow! Plus, with what we save each month, we were able to pay for braces, Tae Kwon Do lessons, and much more.

I think the idea of a TD Show sounds fascinating to me, but then again, I am the prime audience. I think it would be really cool to have four different 'families' or builders from four parts of the country. The 'show' could either be a documentary of the four builder's progress and at the end they could all meet up for a camping trip together. Or, you could have it be a 'reality' show where the four builders build their creations and a team of experts votes on their favorite designs, etc. They could be given different challenges...say, it has to be done using only MDF, or some other design feature. Now that would be a reality show I would be willing to watch!

Consider cutting your cord. I have found that I've read way more than I ever did before. I average a novel a week, where there were years when I would read a novel a year. I also have gotten back into exercising and am feeling better than ever.

We did the same. We have a Roku, hulu plus, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

As for the "down side" we don't see that. We found a channel on the Roku, I think it's called LIVETV. We can watch any of the network channels live. They just are not HD, which isn't that big a deal. We also have the latest "rabbit ears" so we can watch local news, if we want.

Extreme camping-four campers are left in the woods with supplies and have to build a TD to get out.

Thanks for your responses:

The camping season is in full swing.

And yes we have long ago unplugged and now watch an hour of TV in 40 minutes. The best part I like about it is that we no longer feel inferior because we don't drive a Lexus ( not a bad thing either way ) we also don't have to wonder what prescription drugs we are missing out on, ( love all those side affects . . . don't you) ; and my hair color is just fine the way it is. I am a happily follicle challenged guy anyway  Yes bald as the day is long :D

Anyway I like your ideas about a competition build Permit me to run with this and ask for others to input. Just for the fun of it . So without pressure to get us all on TV lets just brainstorm and kick this around for a while. Vicky and I have only been to this years Dam gathering and had a great time.

So the questions and request for input are as follows:

Here out there would like to attend a gathering with the express theme to have a competition Tear Drop Trailer build? Add a Topic heading or add your thoughts to one that is listed below:

1) Plan a Gathering with the specific Theme to have a, Competition Build

a) Where is a good campsite with power and space that we could all camp and have the power and space to make some
saw dust or phoam dust fly.
b) The Gathering could be between 3 and 5 days long?
c) We could bring our own tools.

2) Establish a minimum number people per team and also The Number of Teams . . .
a) How about 10 people? and at least 4 teams.
b) Could 10 people build a TD in 3 six hour days? Let's have a short work day to allow lots of time to play and relax in the
evenings. Something like say 10 AM to 4 PM

3) Who pays for the Trailer Material ?
a) Maybe we could solicit sponsors to donate Parts like Dexter, or perhaps Harbour Freight etc.
b) We could figure out and maybe set Budget for the total cost of the trailer allowance in advance.
c) We could divide that up and include that as part of the, “Gathering Entry Fee”

4) Who takes away or gets the TD Trailers that are build during the competition?
a) We could have a raffle at the end and the winners would get to keep the trailers and take them home.
b) An option might be allow a charity to raffle them off and keep the proceeds for their group? Example: A Children’s
Hospital.

5) What about the trailer design?
a) This is where I ask for others to input your ideas . . .

So just for fun add your ideas to a topic heading above or create and add a new heading on the logistics of this idea. No pressure whatever and if the response is large enough maybe we could take a poll and do some serious planning

A nice Youtube channel would be great! I've been watching rved101's channel. It was neat watching him restore an old travel trailer and getting some great advise from him. I learned allot, even though he uses to sell his dvd's it's very interesting!

I don't know that there is enough interest for more than a few programs but one experience we had on our trip west does indicate the staying power of a single program. We were camped in one KOA and a couple of gentleman came over and said "is that a cricket", no but close, it is a grasshopper design. They had seen RV crazy and wanted a tour of ours.

I like lets make it intresting and do it like monster garage. a team of 10 would be a bit much but i think 5 would be about right. Get discovery or TLC to do it. I recall once them doing a show on homebuilt planes and one guy who tried to do it in one month. he failed. It was called Plane Crazy and put together by PBS.

have a 3000 dollar budget, make it from scratch wheels on up no HF here. 6 day build and on teh 7th they auction it off for a charity. i personaly like Tebow foundation or Make a wish and we put the Logo on it. Ok someone smarter than me make this happen. I will take a week off from work to do it. forget the short day make it a nice long day will have a beer when its all done. I may not have the best skills but i do have the heart that it takes. always an extra pair of hands to hold the steel as someone welds.

According to the proposed show, the rules are as follows:

1.When complete, the trailer must appear to be rocking.
2.The team has $3000 for parts.
3.The team has seven days to complete the trailer.
The first day is for designing
the next five are for building
and the seventh day is for the test of the trailer and auction.
4. Under 1000 lbs dry.
5. 5x10 Max trailer footprint except for the trailer and wheels.
6. Classic teardrop shape.
7. 120 volt and 12 volt with solar

If we fail (which we wont) than we drop it out of the back of an c-130 and truely findout the areodynamics of the shape.

I'd watch it, it could follow a couple builds and show a different manufacturer each episode. One woodbuild, one foamie build, one from and old issue of popluar mechanics even toss in a cargo trailer.

I'd love to unplug but my husband without his Twins, Vikings, Wild and Wolves is a miserable person to know.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but a 5 day build? Are you serious? Some of us take months if not years to complete a teardrop. Nevertheless, good luck on your endevor, and take some pics of the finished product, I'd like to see it.
Hmmm, 5 days? :? 8) Roly

Roly I think it possible to do in five days. Do al sides and roof. Aeromarine epoxy will take about 5 to 6 hours to cure. Five guys on a mission with 10 hour days, I would even put in 16 hour days if i had to. With enough experience helping us and knowledge of assembly and componets it will be a beautiful thing. I look at Sumo trailer he is building an in about 3 weeks he has it almost ready for siding, how much more with some experinced crew. Cabelas would love to support us in something like this. Have them donate all teh rocking camping gear, stove lanterns etc....

the TV show idea is cool but to keep the tiny attention span of the average tv watcher there is going to have to be some personalities involved. There would have to be The Full time Teardropper. The Drunk Teardropper. The hoarder Teardropper ( No not me). The Crazy Teardropper. The Famous Teardropper. Maybe Opra would be willing to spend the night in a teardrop. Who knows?

I think you make a great director campmaster-K your insight is pure genious and commedic :applause:

Can you imagine how good this show could be if you hired the, " Trailer Park Boys " to consult or pick the cast.
