Newbie From Florida

Postby zee » Mon Sep 17, 2012 10:21 am

Hey guys, I was referred to this community from a nice person on the pop up portal. We decided to demo our used popup camper that is gonna be too costly to repair and build ourselves a teardrop on the frame. When I saw the teardrop, I immediately fell in love!! We have no construction or electrical experience but are sure willing to put our best foot forward on this project. If you guys could offer us some helpful tips and suggestions, we would GREATLY appreciate it. We are soooo excited to start and are thinking about moving forward with the demo next saturday. Thanks for welcoming me into this community in advance. :-)

welcome! I would suggest you read as much as you can around here, there is more than one way to build a tear and most of us have the way we did it and the different way we would do the next one. If you don't feel too sure of your skills I would recommend using plans, there is a very good set right here, go to design resources at the top of any page, select generic benroy plans, they will describe the way to build a benroy style trailer, or give you a good way to build your own design.
I found my ideas changed as I built, and I ended up finishing my tear's skin differently than my idea when starting.
Keep in mind how heavy your pop up is, try to keep at least the same weight or go lighter (better on gas) as most people build their first way to heavy.
In demoing you pop up, save all the good bits you can, sink, lights, latches, stove, power center, battery, water tank, power cord, water connections, mattresses, cushions, even the door could all be used in your build or sold.
Good luck, and post pictures :pictures: /build thread, getting people watching your build will tend to bring ideas or advice that can help, and keep you going when the build drags.

Welcome ZEE,
This is the right place to be for your chosen project! Lots of folks in here have started the same way as you are starting.

And yes, there is a tremendous amount of knowledge for you to use and lots of great folks willing to help where possible.

What part of Florida are you in? I am in Orlando.

Best of luck!
