I mean I understand it sucks to be turned away. But at the same time some places have certain rules. Its just the way it is. Calling him a jerk for enforcing the rules doesn't make a lot of since.. I mean sure if he was rude about it thats different. Any campground that says you have to be self contained, means you need a full bathroom with holding tanks. If they had a bathhouse it wouldn't have been a problem.

Some places don't allow you to run your generator after 10 (I kinda of like that one) . Some don't allow tents, ect, ect. Its always good to look into the rules before staying at a new place.

Only ItsChrismck, possibly his family, and the campground host were there. The rest of us can only surmise what went down based on ItsChris' description; and, based on that, it sounds to me like the campground host was inept and unable to communicate properly or in a soothing, non-disruptive way. The other campers at the site, then and in the future, shouldn't have to pay for that. If we put ourselves in those people's camp chairs, nobody wants to hear loud music or angry words on their camping trip or vacation. (Also, there are laws against disturbing the peace which could bring unneeded trouble to the perpetrator.)

ItsChrismck's complaint is with the "host-who-wasn't-the-most". A properly written letter may keep that host from ever being able to work at that campground again or at least put him on "host probation" and may get ItsChris a written apology and possibly a free camping trip. I think that is worth a lot more than any other action one can do.

If I had been in ItsChris's shoes, I would have looked for another spot to camp in somewhere else and would have made the best of a bad situation so as not to totally write off a chance for a happy time. Then, when my trip was over, I would have begun my research into the matter and ...the letter to the proper authorities. You know the old saying, "Don't get mad....

Hi everyone here is a link to the camping rules http://www.portsanluis.com/archives/RVCampingRules.pdf.

As you can see the power and water hook up requirement is missing. They may have something more detailed when I stop by the office.

This has now become a quest you will see photos of me camping here soon.

Interesting Review:

This was our first experience at camping and we chose this site because we Love Avila Beach! The site was nice, good ocean view and clean. Unfortunately, as we understood from campers at the site, the "Camp Hosts" are relatively new. They seem to be on some sort if ego trip. When I called, I was given information by the Male "Camp Host". I followed his directions perfectly. He came by our campsite and spooked one of our Golden Retriever's who, in turn, spooked him. The Camp Host bumped his head on our awning, as he turned around. Apparently his "EGO" was ruffled, and he kicked us out, stating that we "did not follow the rules". As I said, this was our first time camping and I followed the instructions given to me by him, over the phone before we arrived. We spoke to a few of the campers at the site, some were 3 and 4th time visitors and all had complaints about the new Hosts, referring to them as being on some sort of "power trip". One couple said that the "host" came down on him pretty heavily only 10 minutes after he arrived and that he was going to make a complaint. I could not find any place to file a complaint, so I am posting here in hopes that I can save anyone else the trouble that we went through at this campsite. PS. We went on down the road to Pismo Coast Village and they treated us like royalty! We will make Pismo Coast Village our camp spot at the Central Coast from now on. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

We bumped up against this when we were planning our trip out west. One camp ground in San Jose had restrictions on how old your RV could be and that they had to be self contained. Come to find out they have a problem with breakin's and we would not have wanted to be there anyway. That was when we decided on Big Basin Redwoods State Park, one of our favorites. Woodalls tells you what amenities are available in a campground and you can infer from there whether you might bump into this.
We can be as self contained as any larger RV, porta potie... I would have been talking to some one higher up the food chain than a camp host who is temporary and It might be an idea to get a copy of rules and regs for future reference. It did look like an interesting camp site, fight for it.
With a bit of looking here are the regs http://www.portsanluis.com/services/RVCampingRules.pdf and if you have a gray water tank and with your portapotie you would be well with in your rights to stay. The camp host phone and email is on the PDF, but I would contact the administration and file a complaint.
I would contact the administration.

Their regulations state "no tent camping" so this is an RV park and not a campground. It takes a bit more to make you self-contained than just a port-a-potty. You would also need a grey water tank for sink drainage. Also, if they have no bath house there may be concerns about use of a portable shower that drains onto the ground.

I think it is a good idea to try and appeal this to the actual owners of the facility and not deal any further with the camp hosts. But if this is not a state or federal facility, but a privately owned property, then at some point you have to just realize that private businesses have the right to make and enforce their own rules on their own property. Camp somewhere else. Maybe it is a beautiful spot, but if it's private property and the owner has decided you don't meet the requirements to use the facilities then I would say move on.

As far as the rudeness of the camp host, the owners definitely need to be aware of that. There is no excuse for rudeness under any circumstances and it's possible that they are not aware of it if they are not involved in the day to day operation of the business. If they lose enough business, at some point they may choose to get a new camp host and maybe even revamp their list of rules (unless there are some local health ordinances that are forcing these requirements).
