Pinewood Derby Race for Dam Gathering. Spring 2013

Pinecar racing for Dam Gathering and IRG. I will buy a new track and bring it. You people have to make cars and race. I will have good prizes. No mail in cars! Must be there to race and win.

Grant says its ok with him to do a pinecar race at the dam. Teardrop and Camping related racers are encouraged but any participation is welcome. There are going to be as few rules as possible. I will inquire with Doug and Lee to see how they did it. Start building people. Post pics of your builds here and brag and lie about your super fast car.

If we do end up with a few rules they will only be rules of function. Just so it will orderly.

Rules

1. All rules will be subject to debate and final decisions may indeed never be reached.

2. We might , just to make it fun have a few categories. And do some heats. Elimination heats will lead up to the fastest car of the camp. There will be a prize for each category and a Grand prize.

3. We should probably also do best of show. Let make this one two categories. Best of show overall and Best tiny trailer or TV and trailer.

4. Bribing the judges with food or adult beverages will not be tolerated, so do not get caught. ( I happened to be quite fond of ribs, and I will drink just about any beer, not that it matters) Cookies, candy, cakes, pies and Zingers have all been tried. If you get caught bribing a judge a fine of double the bribe will be enforced. No penalty for the judge.

5. Teams are good. Cheering and yelling for your car and your teams car is good.

My qualifications-
I sold, built, raced and judged Pinewood Derby cars for the last 15 yrs for the Cub Scouts in my town. I have been first and last in many races and I will be happy to help or advise you in any way. If you are serious about winning you will not need my help because you already know what to do. If you want to be competitive and dont know how, just ask. The kits are available at most craft stores like Michaels. And most hobby type stores and Boy Scout stores.

If you get your car kit or built it from scratch and it running really fast , stop playing with it . Keep it someplace safe so you dont break it before the race. I will bring glue and first aid.

There are Many youtube videos on how to make your car faster. Do them all, your competition will be!

Kirk...it's important for everyone to know...you need to get the "official" pinewood derby kit. Like he mentioned...you gotta buy the kit. This isn't like the Teardrop races where anything went for an axle or wheels....Doug

Doug is right you will need the "kit" if for nothing else the wheels and axles. I recommend the official cub scout kit because it has 4 independent axles. They just seem faster to me and they keep the wheels on better. IF you dont do real wheels and axles you wont even place.

Your car wont be nearly as cool as this one but it will be about the same size.

I helped my son with pinewood derby cars (built some for myself as well). Our best performer speedwise was a hammerhead shark. It came in second overall. The funny thing is the first place car was a killer whale. Something about the marinelife shapes. Nobody else came close to us.

My brother and I have helped do the race for years learning all the little tricks. Some serious fathers spend crazy amount of hours on those cars. One year a kid walk into the race, late, opens up the box of his derby car kit and pushes the axles on the cars untouched pine block. He set it on the track and won every race. Now that is not normal but it can happen.

I'm in. I always wanted to try this and was disappointed that it wasn't happening at IRG. Even if I don't make it to the dam, I'm going to make a car. My brother was a scout, so I'm a little familiar with it. We also had a few soapbox derby experiences in our neighborhood. Now that's some death-defying fun!

maybe you should invite the Shasta cub scouts over for the race they might become teardrop builders one day!!
