About to get this thing started!!

Postby geocachenut » Tue Sep 25, 2012 7:28 pm

My buddy and I Dave are about to build a trailer. Thankfully, he is a cabinet builder (should come in handy)! My wife thinks I'm nuts because....tomorrow after work our 2004 24' Coachman with double bunks and a queen bed....will be out front for sale. Also, my 1/2 ton Chevy Silverado is going to be parked in the spot the camper was after it sells......Kids are getting older, 2 are out of the house, one is a Junior and the other is in the 6th grade.....we have decided that paying a minimum of a 100 bucks is just plain crazy for fuel to take the camper out for the weekend. We have a 1994 Jeep Wrangler. My vision is this: A 5' X 10' Teardrop, sitting a little higher than most, with the same wheel/tire package as the jeep, color matched of course. Our first stumbling block is the trailer, build my own, or is there a 5 foot wide trailer out there ready to begin our build? Any ideas? Thanks again for this great website!!!!

I pull mine with a 97 TJ Sport. You can go with a 4x8 trailer and then let it hang over 6 inches each side and 2 feet off the back. I built mine from scratch and would make a few changes but I love it. Did the same rim and tires so no need to carry a spare. I also used alot of Jeep parts to match, the taill lights are Jeep the front marker light is the same as on a jeep front fender. my fuse block came out of a jeep at a junk yard. Used footmen for pulls and tie downs. Used door hinges for the doors and the hood hinges for the galley. those hinges i willnot be using again as i will be buying my door premade and the hood hinges on the hatch just doesnt work well. Good luck and ask many questions.

Welcome aboard, you have come to the right place. It would be a great help to you if you could get together with some of the builders and users that live near you. However in order to do so, you gotta let us know where abouts you are from. Better yet, try to make it to a teardrop gathering, either large or small, they are all a bunch of friendly folks and you can get some great ideas. Good luck on your build.

Oops! Sorry, we are from Whitehall, Michigan. I cannot seem to find a spot for gathering's on this site, but I'll keep looking. I'm sure it's here somewhere! Would be great if there is some sort of gathering yet this fall. Winter is on the way, I'm sure nobody is going out there when the snow flies!!
