New WV build

Postby Yakangler » Wed Sep 26, 2012 9:57 pm

WV native here with a stab at a TD build. I got started a little late in the year and space, build conditions, time, and budget are limited... But my reasonable goal is to get at least framed up and working on the interior by the really cold months. Camping by spring!!!!

I've decided on a "weekender" design (modified somehow) after looking at many designs. Simplicity and cost efficiency are the name of the game here. It'll be $10 here and $20 there until we're completed.

No plans, other than the vast supply of ideas on this forum... Sketched up my design and have a 4x8 salvage utility trailer at my disposal (as below)

FIrst 3 weeks of work consisted of stripping the trailer of flooring (steel mesh), grinding some rust, and spraypaint (industrial strength Rustoleum). Then to the 2x frame and 5/8" floor, followed by coating bottom of floor with roofing adhesive.

Total dimensions will be 5x9. Wish me luck...I'm a nurse, not an engineer or fabricator of any type!!

Hello and welcome to the madness. That trailer frame looks like it will work nicely. What size is it and do you have any idea of the style TD you are going to build? My Mom is from WV.
Good luck on your build!!!

Welcome from a transplanted Mountaineer from Huntington (actually Thundering Herd class of 68). I'm about to finish a weekender after about six months. Check out my journal and feel free to "borrow" any ideas that you think will work for you. The TNTTT Forum is a great place for advice and info as you build. Don't be bashful about asking as there is always someone somewhere on the forum to answer just about any question you can throw at them.

Floor bolted to frame with eight 5" bolts and flat/lock washer combination...

Then screwed walls to floor with 2 1/2" deck screws about 4" apart...

Walls and roof framed with 2x3's... Kregged in the roof supports on about 16" centers.

A look at the profile (taken on incline) and detail of the kreg job...

Question is this: Is the framing substantial enough? Plan on 1/4 or 3/8 plywood for roof and walls.

Advice appreciated.

Yakangler

Hey I have not built a weekender yet, but from what I seen that framing should be fine. You might just
need some Horizontal bracing above and below where you doors will be.

Hey Yakangler,
To bad you couldn't have came to the Fall Foliage Gathering in Summersville. We had 25 trailers that you could get Ideas from. You are doing great on your build :applause: Pencil in the weekend after Bridge Day in Oct this yr for our 4th Gathering. More info will be under the TearJerker's chapter section in the Mountaineers of Wv. Chapter. Any ???'s you can pm me here or on TJ's. One thing, you're not building a house so for less weight to tow you could get a sturdy rig when the top and sides go on. I built my first one with 1x2's, 2x2's, 1x3's with luan both interior.exterior. Plus your cabinets and counter will add more sturdiness than you'll imagine. First time builders have a habit of overbuilding, plus those bigger boards cost $$$.

Looks like you've made some great progress!

Great avatar btw, I worked a lot in WV last year before i relocated back to NY, and I had a 'thing' with bridges in WV (there are SO many of them) Nice shot of the new river gorge bridge! I won't clutter up your thread with bridge shots, but if you're interested, I did a post on a shoot I did at the NRG last march... http://photocamel.com/forum/365-projects-photo-day/150963-road-shots-366-2012-a-45.html#post1525292 check out that link to see some shots from that day.

Yep, Ditto on the links not working unless you sign up. :( Yakangler, if you look at my photobucket link at the bottom of my signature, you'll find pics of my build, camping on Cranberry River, our Fall Foliage Gathering and other stuff. Like camping below the Summersville Dam. I hope that you'll join us in Oct. I can send you a Mountaineers of West Virgina Chapter sticker to start your collection. Just pm me your address.
