Hoosier expat in Missouri - First Build

Postby bjeppson » Fri Sep 28, 2012 9:24 am

Well, I guess it all starts today. The grand plan is to build a traditional teardrop shape with a simple galley in the back. That idea will have a ultralight "ish" approach. It is going to be a balance between light weight materials and some creature comforts. Some next steps are to find out about getting a title and registration for a home built trailer here in Missouri, that is if I do not have a certificate of origin.

I am not as concerned with the woodworking aspects however after reading tons of stuff here on the forum re the trailers, I am out of my league with axle type, drop angle etc. etc.

Welcome. You shouldn't have too much trouble getting a title. I don't know the process first hand, but my uncle used to build hotrods/customs in Bolivar. He was on a first name basis with the DMV. He would just call and the next day a trooper would come out to the farm. A few weeks later, he would receive his new title. Just have receipts for everything and take pictures as you build. Documentation is the key.

Have my eye on a friend old pop-up camper that has fairly severe water damage. Maybe able to pick it up for a small amount. Here's my thinking and please correct me if you spot errors in judgement.

It has a title (need to make certain it isn't a salvage title).
It has a chassis that can be modified
It has a converter that can be salvaged.
It has a shore power cable and outlet.
It has a battery box that can be salvaged.
It has wiring a harness.
Need to check on trailer brakes (will need to refurbish axle and bearings etc.)
Has lights to include marker lights
It has stabilizers.
It has a tailer jack.

Has a frig though would not use that.
Has a stove which could be used (not certain about installing one)
Can recycle the aluminum.

Is my thinking correct?

Great News, a friend who recently purchased a 5th wheel is retiring his old pop-up. He called the morning and I get the frame and axle. :D
