Attached tents..ideas...

Postby Eric Adams » Sun Sep 26, 2004 7:24 pm

I was thinking of attaching a tent to the front of my future TD to use as a dry spot to hold gear, changing area, etc. Maybe something that'll have largish screened windows to allow air flow but be able to be let down for privacy. Anyone do this? Pics? My main question is attachment to the TD. Snaps? And how to cut the back of the tent. Thanks

Eric,
I considered all sorts of different set-ups for much the same idea. Finally decided to go with a pop-up tent you can stand up in to change, etc. (easiest way to go)
It's just a few steps from the trailer to privacy for changing, etc.

Or..you could go with an ez-up (with sides when needed) up against the trailer?

This is the screen room I picked. I liked the way it sets up and it has all four storm sides attached.

Eric, I had it made because I don't have a sewing machine for canvas. When laid out on the ground, it looks like a 'T'. All three sides roll up and when the sides are down they snap together. It also snaps accross the top of the tear. And I have had no problems with wind up to 30mph. The banner is the 'Southern California Touring Tears' banner. You say so!!! They are the group that you've seen on 'RV Crazy' Right now there is only a hand full of us that have the flags.

Here's another pic:

I used a "SpeedyStitch to do the Jeep top. Worked pretty good.

Any chance of a non-member getting a banner? :) I'd be a member if I wasn't several thousand miles away. :)

I like this one:

They also have a more substantial canvas side tent. Eurocampers.com has a number of side tents and if you do a search for minivan tents there's a company that has tents with sleeves that wrap around the rear door when open. Maybe a way to keep sheltered while cooking. Also Paha Que has a 12'X12' screen room with privacy panels. The walls are 6.5ft high and all the walls can be set up as awnings. You could cover the entire trailer and be as open or as private as you like.

Wade

P.S. Gage has a great set-up!

I like the Sportz Van/SUV Tents. They can be used stand alone and have a "tunnel" connector to hook up to the back/side of a van or SUV that would be very easy to connect to the side doors on most teardrops.

But 15 minutes to put it up. What's the point? Might as well leave the teardrop home and go back to tent camping. Or like I do once in a while, break out the Class 'A' and go in style and total comfort

If you want a finished updated look, the example vantexan gave looks great to me. Cabela's sells or did sell a tent along the same idea. Hooked up to a truck with a camper shell. Of course there is nothing wrong with the homemade look. Gage has a very nice example and the canvas would give you that dated look as well. Really look good with a 40's design and 40's ride to pull it with. Although, I do not think canvas would be my choice, especially for summer camping. Remember the canvas scout tents when I was a lad. Getting harder to breath just thinking about it. But then again, you are not going to be spending a great deal of time in it.

Saw a guy on TV who made a "dressing room" using an opaque shower curtain. He curved a rod in a semicircle and just hung the curtain around it. Looked better than what I make it sound.

Show us a pic(s) of what you come up with. It is great to see other ideas.
One of the things that appeals to me about this HOBBY.

Cheers,
