tip out

Postby droid_ca » Tue Oct 23, 2012 10:14 pm

I was thinking of my design and thought that a tip out may be in order and was wondering how you seal them so they are air tight or dust tight while traveling I know Rolly has tip out on his little wheel-less tear...But has any one else built a tip out?? would love to see pictures of it Thank you

I thought Roly's wheel-less had a slide-out, not a tip-out...? That said, I've see plans and pictures of a roughly 1950's camp trailer that had canvas-sided bed platforms that tipped out. I've been told that tip-outs tended to leak? For slide-outs, they use a large, thick rubber-like seal. It looks like this:

Rob
We are having a hard time figuring exactly what you are building???
Do you have a plan yet?
Can't wait to start following your build journal.

I have a work on the fly kinda attitude there is somewhat of a plan I think I started a build journal but it's not exactly a build journal more of my wants desires and just what I have been doing in regards to my trailer with the little space that I do have I'm just trying to figure out how to get an extra inch or foot here and there. I have 3 dogs and might be getting another one in a couple of weeks so I need as much space as I can get but I don't want to haul it with my f150 I would like to be able to use my tracker so I wont go very far but I'll do it in style seems everyone that lives here doesn't go very far to many great places to go within an hours drive. Ok now I have gone off topic so back on track what I was considering is if I were to do a tip out on the front end then the movable section could rest on the A-frame section of my trailer and on the inside that could be a couch but that is only if I don't put a bay window in the front..Clear as mud hey...if I could use sketch up I'd show you the ideas that I'm having

Here's a video on how Norman built one. I know we have some pictures somewhere but I couldn't find them right now.

If you do a tip-out shaped like a 1/4 circle
[side profile] it should be straightforward
enough to seal - floor area equals sidewall opening.
If the floor area isn't identical to the sidewall opening area,
then you'll need to provide a travel cover of some sort to
make up the difference and cover the remaining gap.
In large mobile homes with tip-outs they just cover
it with a tarp or plastic sheeting for transport. For
a very portable TTT/TT/TinyHouse, that's not practicle.
One way to have a ready gap cover is to hinge a panel
to the outside edge of the opened floor area equal to the
remaining opening size. Or make the panel removable -
but then you have to remember to keep it around and
not lose it or accidentally use it for another project.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Chip has a new design, and I must admit, it's a doozie!!!

Chip has also suggested that we have a contest to figure out the sealing... what do you think?

Mike...

P.S. I think we should just throw a big tarp over it, in fact make that a camouflage tarp so no one can see it...

or there is this way

Chip built it... but not quite to plan. He build the central unit, which is called the Pickle Inn. Then he never built any of the slide outs. You can see the Pickle Inn in the HOF.
