Reservations at Bahia Honda 27 Dec 2 Jan

Postby coop74 » Tue Oct 23, 2012 7:37 pm

I love the Keys,,, in the past I have gone down there on my motorcycle and I always have managed to find a place to stay. Now with a trailer, wife, and kids in tow I cannot risk just showing up.

With all that said is there a trick to actually getting a reservation at Bahia Honda or does someone have one they are not going to use?

This is what I pulled from the 'Bahia Honda State Park' web page. Who knows, maybe that'll help.

Reservations are recommended, in advance, especially during holidays. Camping or cabins — (800)326-3521

While I was planning a trip for March 2013, realized the state park sites are booked full already because the rates are much cheaper then the privately owned parks.

Without confirming, my guess is a person has to plan a year in advance to stay there, watch when the reservation windows open, and gample for a reservation. If I recall, reservations are available 6 months in advance.

December thru March are prime tourist season. I found a site at Leo's Campground in Key West. $45 for a tent site with electricity (pets not allowed in tent site). Full hook up sites are $60, pets allowed.

I too enjoy the Keys closes thing to Hawaii temperatures in the 48 states,
remember I was a sailor stationed aboard a submarine in Hawaii
both places very laid back open front shops (bars) fun times, where did the time go?

I have tried for years to get into Bahia Honda I just kept forgetting to make reservations early enough.
one year we went down late september and stayed downtown at a private campground near the turtle corals.
short walk to downtown still hot but very nice.

We are touring both Florida coasts in February, after 2 months in Georgia. We wanted to get into a state park in the Keys, but back in July when we were setting up reservations nothing was available there, all booked up. Luckily, Long Key state park wasn't taking reservations because of construction projects going on. We called and got the day when reservations would be accepted again, I think it was July 18 at 8AM. We were online at Reserve America right at 8, by 8:15 the whole park was reserved. We did get a site. That's how popular the state parks in the Keys are!

I guess I should count myself fortunate as I have stayed there a few times. With that said it was always just driving up on the bike around 9 in the morning and asking about cancelations. Good Karma for me I guess.

I will say however if you get a chance to stay there do it. Best Sunrise and Sunset in the world (and yes I have been to HI too).

I am still hoping someone will call and say "hey take my reservation because I won the lottery and bought an entire island" (trying to make it a win win)...
