I too am single and have cut my box spring and mattress down to fit in my 4 x 8. The ragged springs on the edges are a bit of a problem when I try to tuck in the cut-down quilted bedspread. Most of my toilet fits nicely in the corner but the seat and lid work better with the porclean part still on it. The cut-down glass-topped coffee table is a pain to store, but sure looks nice out on the grass when I am eating. I mounted my large wall mirror on one wall, but it completely blocks off the second door. Lastly, I clipped the ends off of the ceiling fan blades, but I still hit my head on it when I sit up in bed. I find that my recycled house furniture is sure nice to look at, but not very functional.
:? Sorry, all tongue in cheek, but I just couldn't resist the temptation..........but good luck on your addition.

I'm still sleeping on a army cot in my apartment. Keeps the women from wanting to spend the night. ;)
They don't understand the table saw set up in the living room either.
In the summer I just wheeled it out on the lawn.
Never got around to buying living room furnature. I rather buy tools when the need arrives.
Also clean my wrenches in the dishwasher.
I'm the one the landlord turns to for help. All the other neighbors hide when they show up. I go out and say hi the them.

Hahaha    That is too funny

I'm presently cutting up other peoples furniture to make my own I just got a big butchers block table way to big to go in my little build so I'm going to cut it up and make a smaller one was thinking with the scraps I might make an actual cutting board so I'm going to put a small hole in it si the scraps can go right into the waste basket and I might even make a LazySuzan out of a piece Still wondering what I should do with the left overs (it is a big piece)...

Great you got me looking around my house now..Hmm that would look good inside my trialer, like having a little piece of home with you where ever you go

You can verify this with my adorable wife of 38+ years.

Every day I utter the following phrases. Mannnnnnnnnnny times.

Yes dear.

Right away dear.

Is there anything else dear.

Is there anything you'd like me to do dear.

However, I do virtually exactly as I please. She does prefer the "lip service" to just being ignored or argued with.

Back to the original subject: When I redid our kitchen, we used some cabinets that we found on Craigslist. Figuring out where they would all go was a bit of a challenge. To make the last one fit, I had to cut a double door cabinet in half, which was done with much deliberation on a table saw. Each half got a new piece of plywood for a side. The half that went into the kitchen got the middle style, which was now on the side. I had to cut a small piece for an extension of the side style (near the drawer). It came out very well.

My tear drop is still a figment of imagination, so there is no frankenfurniture in there yet.

Hey slow, if things are getting that serious you may have to work yourself into a Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday Schedule, unless of course you have to help deliver a calf, then you may want to consider an extra bath that day. Calving as you probably know can get kinda messy. Congrats hope it all works out for you. Bill

My dad's "hobby" was building houses, and he never bought what he could re-use. So I grew up looking at what "was" and wondering what "could be" This has served me well through the years, and has definitely continued with Gertrude. Her new galley consists of several pieces of recycled materials. Her new bed frame is 2x3 lumber I had from who-knows-when, purchased for I-can't-remember-that-far-back! This was painted with various paints that were sitting around the shop. And I cut her new mattress into pieces to match the bins of the frame, so that access would be easier. OH - and her "bear skin rug" was made from material left over from my Halloween costume of several years ago. I also had cut down the legs of a shelving unit that worked well for most of the season - until the new bed-frame-with-storage-bins was installed and I didn't need the shelves any more. Will definitely be repurposing something else over the winter! In fact, I have a large wooden disk that wants to be a table - I just have to determine where it will stay and how it will work!

I really need to re-retire one of these days.

This thread reminded me of the first night I woke up in my new place after my divorce. The only piece of furniture I had was an old wicker couch that had no cushions. It was Christmas Day, no heat, no bed only that horrible short creaky couch and a sleeping bag. It was awesome.

Reusing existing "furniture" and such is a great practice -
provided it has served it's purpose and is no longer needed.
Older unneeded wood furniture can be a great source of
high quality wood for projects. Just be sure you aren't
destroying something with more real value than you
realize.

We had some cypress 3/4in thick wall kitchen cabinets,
and when we remodeled the kitchen I was able to build
some new cabinets and an island with all the old wood
from the cabinets that I needed to takeout for the new
floorplan [plus a sheet or so of plywood for drawers and
some interior parts]. It saved money and we have no
particleboard and off-gassing modern glues to deal with.

I hate it when on all of the 'home' and 'DIY' TV shows ["House Porn"]
that they demo everything with sledgehammers. They ruin
or throw out a lot of good usable materials or some that
could go to a recycling type store as is. Quite a waste.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

I still haven't bothered to buy furnature after the divorce. why bother When I rather have tools or camping gear. I'm just happy to be done paying child support. :D
