Based on my memory foam pillow, memory foam can get a bit stiff when it is cold.

I have a full memory foam bed at home and in the camper I have a topper that is about 2 inches on top of some regular foam(regular foam makes our bench seats). The first night of the memory foam my wife said she woke up and forgot we were in the trailer.

As for being stiff when it is cold. I think minutes after you are on it your body heat will take care of that. BTW we too have a queen size bed in the camper.

I had a 2" memory foam topper in my trailer and home bed. I took it off. I would sink into a hole and could not move around.

I too have a memory foam topper on my home bed I don't sink into it
in fact I find it very comfortable I say go for it
when you get one it comes packed into a small package that when the straps are cut it expands
some have placed it in the trailer before cutting the straps that allow it to expand otherwise it would be a bear to get
through the small TD door.
it does need to be "aired" out before using as it has an odor that soon disappeares

In the spring I'll be back to Walmart ordering my 3rd foam bed. They often go on sale and if not stocked they have a lot of free shipping offers to you home.

The first was an 8" queen for the td, the second a 6" queen for the ctt.

The third will be a twin sized for my Simple Rimple build. The interior on that is 39", just the right width for a twin. Not sure if it will be a 6" or 8" but either one would be perfect for this current project.

I have a gel-foam topper. It's appears to be memory foam with gel added. Supposedly this takes care of any issue with heat retainment, making a hole and sinking into it (I, too, am a little heavtier than most), and any other problems you can think of. So far it works very well! Am heading out for three weeks on the road, so will let you know if I still like it once I get back!

Mike, we bought one of the 4" Wal Mart Memory Foam Toppers for our TD & added a 1 1/2" 'egg crate' foam topper to that. It gives us 5.5" of comfort that rivals our bed at home. My TD is 60" wide (outside width) so I had to 'trim' about 3 1/2" from the side for it to fit in the 57.5" inside cabin. We've had absolutely NO problems with cold spots. sinking, or any discomfort associated with the memory foam. I think out mattress is 2" of memory foam & 2" of high density foam but whatever it is we really like it. Have never spent an uncomfortable night on it since we got it in 2008. I have another one (full size instead of queen) that I'll put in the Scamp fiberglass trailer when I finish re-habbing it. We're not large size folks (I weigh around 165-170 & wife is 125) so we don't put a lot of stress on the mattress; it works well for us - The mattress is really compressed inside the wrapper in that box so you hafta let it 'expand' for a while after you open it. Ours took a couple of hours if I remember correctly

This is what I have for the Scamp, bought the exact same thing for the TD except in queen size...

Slow,

We have the 8" queen size memory foam mattress from Wal-Mart, no complaints at all. Like mentioned earlier when cold, it can get a little hard, but when it's cold, we turn on the heat anyway!

Got a memory foam walmart online version. I think it is 4" foam plus 2" memory foam glued together . I think it was @ 150 for queen. Love it. Better than house bed! Has a cover plus our 12 v matures warmer, so not too cold or too hot. In this case cheap is just fine. Got to let it unroll, expand and air off for a while.

Memory foam mattresses [full memory foam ones like Temperpedic] use
ambient heat and body heat to work. In a cold weather situation - as we
experienced during an ice storm power outage one winter, with no heat
in the house for days [no electric power] and with daytime temps of 50s -
they become very dense and didn't work as they normally do, AND they
draw away your body heat Continuously. You are then cold and uncomfortable,
even under multiple blankets/comforters. They would not make a good
camping mattress for cooler temps at all. I also think you sink down too
much into them and it can be hard to move around on them then as well. The
instructions say to not use any mattress pads under the sheets as they 'interfere'
with how they work - i.e. use your body heat to make it conform to your shape.
I use a full thickness comforter under my sheets on it and it works much better
for me, comfortable and it doesn't 'swallow' you like they do normally. But this is
with home inside temps of 70s-80s. I haven't had any experience with
it this way in a no heat situation but I suspect it would still be similar to our
ice storm experience. I'd say a regular foam [latex?] would be a much better
choice.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

I have a Tempurpedic at home, and HAD a 4 inch memory foam topper that I put over the mattress that came with the Little Guy. I loved it. But the coldest I camped in was 40 degrees. I used a mattress heater to warm it up before going to bed.

Memory foam does get rock like properties when cold. I tried to try out a Tempurpedic in an unheated warehouse in Wisconsin during a below zero cold snap. Don't do that. It feels nothing like it will when in a heated room.

The Walmarche ones come vacuum packed in a box. They easily fit in the teardrop. Then, you cut open the package, and it grows large and fills out. I removed it a few times from the Little Guy. It'll scrunch up OK and go out the door.

I used a regular mattress pad on it. I do on the Tempurpedic too. I'm quite round and I do not sink in a hole in it.

Now I have a thinner memory foam topper on top of the cushions in my pointy trailer. It is also comfy. That is still thin enough that I can still fold up my trailer with the bed made. I give memory foam a thumbs up.

What I would really like in my trailer is my reclining chair. I have not slept in my bed at home since Dec 2010.

I have the 4" memory foam "topper" from WalMart, and like it. It does get a little stiff in cold temps, but a couple warm bodies fixes that.

I have a queen size 4" memory foam topper in my teardrop. Hate it, hate it hate it. I put a futon mattress on top and it's not so bad now. I'm 6'2" and 215 lbs. and would sink until I was essentially laying on the plywood floor. It does stiffen up when it's cold. I wouldn't get another one, but I would consider a regular foam mattress with the 2" memory foam top. Or maybe a thicker memory foam would work better, but the 4" topper just didn't cut it for me. I guess it depends on what you like, but I don't really like a firm mattress anyway. I love tent camping, but one of the main reasons I built my teardrop was to keep from sleeping on the hard ground, that's why I like the softer mattress.
