Good Idea or not?

Postby catsmith » Tue Oct 30, 2012 9:57 pm

Well I spent the last 45 minutes watching the Voice and typing a well articulated, witty post about an idea I had for a travel trailer thingie that is bouncing around in my brain. I hit the button to post it and I had been logged out. I love technology!

OK here is the plan: (one more time)

1. Use a 4x10 trailer that is homemade, ugly as homemade sin, built out of stuff you find on a drilling rig and did I mention it is bulletproof?
2. Still be able to use the trailer for hauling 4wheeler, lumber, mulch, pigs etc. (oink oink)
3. have a queen size bed
4. Reuse and repurpose as much as possible. (Not trying to save the spotted three eyed pimpled faced platypus. I'm a gov employee that has too many kids/grandkids.)

Resources:

1. Ugly Trailer
2. Old worn out no titled scotty trailer for parts.
3. Duct tape, 550 cord, blood, sweat and tears.

My idea:

1. build on skids
2. kinda like a truck bed camper
3. that is about as far as I have gotten that I can get out of the weird place I like to call my mind.

Open to links, ideas, ridicule etc. Let me have it!

Thanks!

The idea seems sound.
Its all about having fun building, then enjoying camping in your creation!

There are a few trailers on here that are built to be removed maybe install lifting eyes and use a come along and straps I don't like the skid ideal myself but thats me. You will find whats best for you and build it your way but please enjoy the building and camping in it.

A fast posting hint:

This'll prevent you from losing a post. I know from
experience how frustrating it is to do so.

Compose your posts in wordPad [or something
similar] and once it's to your satisfaction, just
copy it and then paste into the posting box.

If you save it as a file in the program you've composed
it in, you can always pause when doing it and then
return to it later to finish and post etc..

I also always preview before submitting, that way
you can test any links you may have included,
and confirm any pics you've included also come
out.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

P.S. Welcome to the Forum too ! Have fun planning.

OK here ia a pancake.

This is the donor trailer. I am thinking of stripping the metal skin and using the same basic shape but only about 4ft tall. I will reuse the windows, door and some of the kitchen to build the galley. The new camper will be built to slide on an existing trailer I have. Bolt it down and go. Need to haul a hog? Slide it out and go with the slide in hog hauler.

You may need to do some modification on the frame. I'd bet that trailer has a dropped floor in it so you won't have a straight longsill on the frame. I could be wrong though. I used to lift my 49 Kit on and off a motorcycle trailer with a solid deck that I built. While I thought it was a great idea....the hassle of taking it on and off outweighed the advantages of it. I had to lift not slide however. A good beefy skid would allow it to pull on and off easily. Good luck on your build. Doug

You would do better to build one from scratch and move some of the parts from that one to it.

Look at doug's. Unless that unit has fond memories you are going to have more work then fun.
If you put it on skids are you going to have a tracker with a scoop that you can put forks on to. It is so cheep to have two trailers one for camping and one for cars. License and Insurance it so cheep it is better if you have the space to have the best of both worlds. I would guess you have the space because you would be putting the camper some place while you are moving cars.
