...we used MinWax ClearSheild on the floor...the rest got Polycryllic including the galley...all wood was finished on the bench before assembly and we have had no "odor" problem....from what I have read here about "spar varnish" y'all can have it...I'll use ClearShield and Polycryllic, thank you very much...as a side note, ClearShield will cure witha slight "warm yellow" tint to it and the Polycryllic will finsih out clear....

Thanks guys, for the tips on keeping chemical odors down. I think I'll also use the tightbond II for gluing when possible instead of the stinky stuff. :?

Check out titebond III. I've been using it exclusively since I found out about it, and it's some good stuff...

Chris can probably tell you too, how nice it is to work with...

Update on the "smell"

Postby spyderhead » Mon Apr 03, 2006 11:48 am

Between the passing of time (with all doors open, etc) and the baking soda, charcoal, etc., used to absorb the smell, it is fading. I never realized that glue and varnish had such long lasting aromas.

Ohhh Yeahhhh! That's why the sides of drawers should always be finished with shellac. Other wise, they will smell for a lonnnnng time!

Still trying

Postby spyderhead » Fri Apr 21, 2006 11:48 am

After almost six weeks, still trying to lose that glue, sealant, whatever smell. Any new earth-shattering ideas? The smell really is too strong for the teardrop to be used.

Repainting to overcome smell?

Postby spyderhead » Tue May 16, 2006 2:34 pm

Is it possible to use some sort of water based shellac or sealant to seal in the odor from glues, etc? My teardrop is 2 1/2 months old now; the smell is fading, but I am running out of time (vacation coming up). Thinking maybe the interior could be repainted and resealed.

Some where I seem to remember that the minwax urethanes were not uv resistant and if used on the outside of a tear or even in galley that got a lot of sun the wood tone or color could change,,, I used Helsman spar varnish on the outside and minwax, waterbased poly inside,,,

Is this correct about UV inhibited or am I all wet again,????

From what I know about the materials you mentioned, Chip, you are correct. Helmsman Spar Var on the outside for me also. Haven't decided on the galley yet.

I used polyurethane for the finish on my floor and storage box. I noticed that the odor in the storage box was quite strong when I removed the lid.
I then put two coats of the waterbased polyshield and it seems to seal the odor in. There is no longer any odor from the Polyurethane.
I was also able to put 3 coats on in one evening.

Shellac is alcohol based, it takes a couple weeks to fully cure. The outgassing is how many glues and adhesives cure, I'm not sure if you'd want to stop that process by sealing them up.
Commandant Louis Joseph Lahure has a singular distinction in military history - he defeated a navy on horseback. Occupying Holland in January 1795, the French continental army learned that the mighty Dutch navy had been frozen into the ice around Texel Island. So Lahure and 128 men simply rode up to it and demanded surrender. No shots were fired.
