Itty Bitty Standy

Postby JuneBug » Thu Nov 01, 2012 3:08 pm

Came across The Small Trailer Enthusiast Web site, where they have a feature on The Whetzeldorf, a tiny trailer replica based on the resto of a tiny 1957 Metzendorf!

This looks in some ways to be the perfect viable standy (but too tiny to have a bathroom). The trailer is made by Whetzel Trace Trailers, and they also make teardrops.

Now in production, the The Whetzeldorf is a modern version of a compact camper made in 1957, by Martin Metzendorf in West Farmington Ohio. Metzendorfs were made from 1957 to about 1966, and all models known to exist were built with a 10 ft long body. We came across one that is only 8 ft long, but has all the amenities of its larger cousin. No known information is available and probably was a prototype or worlds Fair exhibit. It has become very popular at the vintage shows we have taken it to, and so we decided to build a similar model.
Dimensions:
76" wide
98" long
76" high
Weight: 1200 #
These trailers look to have a dropped floor.
According to the Small Trailer Enthusiast web site, the trailers run ~ $7500.

We shared a site at the Hoosier Fall Gathering with Dan. He brought the original Metzendorf. Very cool little camper. 8)

It IS cute and the proportions seem "just right," in a Goldilocks kind of way.
It seems like it could be a bit more straightforward to build than a teardrop, because you don't have to build the hatch, a fairly complicated affair on many levels, and you only need one door.
The awesome thing about the Whetzeldorf is that it is quite affordable if you wanted to go that route!

It's definitely a nice design. In some ways it's similar to the foamie standie that still beckons me to finish.

I suspect it's a design that a lot of folks would migrate to that want a little more than a teardrop.

It's one of the things that I plan on playing with again, once I've got the teeny weeny teardrops out of my system.
