Overseas Travel

Postby wincrasher » Fri Nov 09, 2012 7:32 am

This has nothing to do with teardrops, but it does about travel.

I have the opportunity to take 2 business trips out of the country - 1 this month (November), the 2nd in December. Each about a week long. I should have 1 or 2 days each week for site-seeing or other tourist activities.

1st trip is to Bangkok, Thailand.
2nd trip is to Belfast, Ireland.

What I'm looking for is any suggestions on what I should do to get the most out of these trips. Has anyone been to these places, what would you suggest as a "must see" or "must do" ?

All my flights, hotels, passport, visas, etc are all arranged and paid by the company, so no issues there. My flight to Bangkok is thru Dubai with only a 2 hour layover :NC I really wish I had an extended layover there to see the city.

I have not been to either of those places, but what a great opportunity you have. When I have visited abroad I always upgraded my camera equipment.

Oh, and always wear a shirt with the Canadian flag on it. No one will bother you, cause everyone loves the Canadians! :)

We have been to Belfast a couple times. Absolutely find a pub that has traditional music. Be willing to talk to the locals. If you're able go out to the Giant's Causeway. There is now a HUGE museum dedicated to the Titanic. There is a children's museum that is huge and amazing and hands on called the W5. I enjoyed myself, too, while the kids ran all over.

DON'T have an opinion about The Troubles. Don't offer suggestions. Be honest and open with the locals and you'll find that they slow down their conversations so you can join in.

If you want info on ROI, where we have much more experience, let me know!

Please please don't be one of those trashy Americans that drops litter all over. You won't find trash cans there (IRA puts bombs in them) so put it in your pocket.

Years ago, when going to London, I was told to not wear athletic shoes because everyone would know I was a tourist. I figured when I got in line to see the tower of London, I'd be pegged so I was going to be comfortable. But it was true. No one wore them except Americans. It's been 20 years and I see from movies and tv that sneakers, jeans and ballcaps have crossed the pond.

The only place to visit and travel in is here, Down Under. This is where all the people walk upside down.

...and they drive on the wrong side of the road. I nearly got the shinola knocked out of me in Ireland not looking before I crossed a street. I'm not taking a chance in Melbourne or Sydney. Also, the Chaser boys scare me.
