I fell in love with the ALTO teardrop.

I actually saw one of these being constructed on a Canadian TV show. So I looked them up. Just google "Alto Safari Condo" I can't afford one at 25 grand. but it is a thing of beauty and something to dream about.

True enough but we need to dream or think like a rich person. These thing are obviously towed behind a Mercedes Sprinter Airstream Interstate 3500 and used as an auxilliary bedroom for guests.

I remember that Mike. the biggest problem with the Alto is the weight of the full length hatch. It would definitely need some sort of power lift.

Where ever we raise the hatch is home.
Darn blank states keep getting further away and we keep traveling slower ain't never gona get this map full.

This is one of my great pet peeves. I have been tent camping my entire life. On average I figure I spend at least 80 nights a year sleeping in tents. We had a real nice one and we were gone up to the parks restrooms and these kids came up and took knives and completely destroyed it. When to police confronted the parents and told them what their kids did, they found it funny and became very proud of their kids. So we had to get a new tent. When you have a single income and a family of 4 that includes a special needs child, every penny counts. So after several months saving up, we got us a very nice tent. It was supposed to be rated for high winds and it even had a mounting bracket ans window just for an window unit. We were living large now. Then the wind came sweeping down the plains and this fancy tent started collapsing on us. We called the company that made it and they said that it was designed to do that so that the tent poles wont break. Its nothing to worry about and when the gust of wind dies down then it will return to its upright shape. I'm sorry but I have two problems with that #1 This is Oklahoma the wind does not die down and when it does, then it is time to run for cover. #2 Why not just make the tent poles stronger. So we decided that it was time to upgrade from tents. So we went to the nearest RV dealership and figured that we would be in good shape. Just about everyone in our neighborhood has a pretty new RV that they use once a year. They always complain that they have more money troubles then us so we were going to get hooked up. We never priced RV's before and it wont happen again. They were wanting 90k for an RV (actually saw one for 175K) 30-50K for a trailer. We couldn't believe those prices. So we decided to check out slide in campers because we see them everywhere. Lance seemed to be the most popular brand so we hit the internet. 15-20K for a truck camper! Here is what I don't understand. The economy is supposed in the dumps right now and everywhere I look people are sporting new RV's and trailers. Were are all of these people getting the money? The problem is that the companies are charging these prices only because people are paying these prices. We were completely discouraged at least until we found this forum. Now we have new ideas and new dreams.

Perhaps check Craigslist for pop-up campers? Seems like a good used pop-up camper would be just right for your family; the ideal compromise between a tent and a trailer. Just keep in mind that Craigslist does have scammers and some weird people posting ads (just like normal life) but if you are alert and have patience, the right deal will come along.

Living in Central Texas and driving on I-35, I cannot for the life of me "get" these RV places with 40 acres of absolutely monster trailers (40-feet long) and 5th wheels. Who is buying them, who has the big truck to pull them and who can afford the gas? There IS an oil/gas boom going on in Texas, with lots of people living in large trailers like this, but not around here.

We stayed at a campground outside of Moab, Utah two years ago for its proximity to mountain bike trails. It was full of RVs that I would put in the $100,000 to $150,000 range and most were pulling a nice car as a "dingy."

You might be surprised at the amount of storage. We had a 2009 Aliner Classic Highwall. We picked up our Alto R1713 on 11/3/14. Before we loaded it, I weighed it at a local grain elevator. Even though it starts out at around 1650 lbs., ours, with all the options, tipped the scales at an even 2,000 lbs. Options include heat pump (takes extra room), LPG furnace (takes extra room), 12 volt compressor fridge, solar panels, microwave, 12 volt TV. We still got everything we had in the Aliner into the Alto. There's more storage than you think. I haven't weighed it with all our gear in it yet, but knowing what the gear added to the Aliner, it should weigh in at 2,450 lbs. We're going to spend over two months in it in Florida this winter. I think we're going to love it! :wine:
