This is a hot button topic for sure. There are no right or wrong answers. I say each person SHOULD have the right to choose.

Here is an interview of Dave Grossman on this very subject.

The fact remains, if you outlaw guns; then only outlaws will have them. But someone who's inclined to do harm to someone else, will use a shovel, a truck, a club, etc., If they don't have access to a gun. Heck, if y'all would start dealing drugs up there, our president and attorney general will supply you all the guns you could want.

Larry I have my carry license and carry a taurus TCP .380 in a holster when I travel, and in certain area's around Atlanta. I recently bought a Ruger SR9C, and took it to the range and ran 100 rounds thru it and Love it and the way it shoots. For the Upstate SC person, head across the line to Lavonia and go to the Guns and Gear gun shop and range and check out there selection and if I remember right you can rent guns to try out and find what you like. If you were closer down mine way I could take you to Trigger time a range I go shoot at and you can rent different guns for one price and just buy ammo from the range to try them out.

Personally I was raised with guns and shooting, whether humting or for sport but I have always owned one. Do I want to use one against someone, No but when someone threatens my life or my family then I will do what I need too. When I was 37 I had divorced my first wife and had moved to a small house in a small town outside of Atlanta, and during the night something woke me up arund 2 am. I grabbed the shotgun by the bed and walked out into the living area and met face to face with an intruder. I fired and knocked him out the window, it was loaded with birdshot. I grabbed the phone and called the police who were there in 5 mins and explained what happened. As they were searching outside they did find the guys trail and found to my surprise a handgun. They did find the guy and arrested him and he was cranked up on meth at the time and was breaking into houses for what ever he could get his hands on. He was lucky and so was I, he was because I had been quail hunting the week before and didn't have it loaded with slugs, I was because for once I slept lightly and the noise woke me up. Say what you will but guns are a tool or sports equipment and they don't kill, people do!

During my 8 years of full-time motorhoming, I had a revolver hidden but ready to use within my rig. For some reason, thieves think RVers are wealthy and are an easy target for an armed intruder. Most of my fellow RVers felt the same way as I did. I can't even imagine that anyone would go boon-docking without some sort of personal protection. Anyone can break into my teardrop with a sharp pocket knife, and that is why I now am now protected with a powerful can of hornet spray. It'll shoot 12 feet and the poor guy that gets it in his eyes, has to go to the emergency room to get relief. I still have my weapon at the ready in my house, but never expect to use it, since our neighborhood is virtually crime free. I would like to see what Slow Cowboy has to say about this subject.

No it's the idiot behind the gun and on the cell phone that kill people.
Like I said before I couldn't live in a paranoid State where I felt the need to carry a weapon to protect myself.
I thought living in the land of freedom meant just that? You should come stay with me for a week, it might change your mind about how you live. But then again the shock of seeing not one person not packing might put the fear of gawd in you as you would have to deal with a situation in a polite way where no one gets shot and killed! lol!

A little perspective is in order. In this country, you have a greater chance of choking to death on food (the classic "cafe coronary") than you have of being shot. Nationwide, your chances of being mugged or physically assaulted are considerably lower than in the "civilized" city of London.

As for paranoia, perhaps the sheep should read more of Edmund Burke: "There is no safety for honest men but by believing all possible evil of evil men."

Actually the hornet spray is overrated as far as I can tell http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/crime/a/wasp_spray.htm and I think you're better off with bear spray.

I have my permit and the teardrop is always equipped with a Taurus Judge 45/410. In the house and sometimes under my jacket is a Beretta.

This is a very interesting topic.

I carry a gun on me every day. And for a much better reason than "Somebody's messin with my stuff!"

But when I go camping I leave it at home.

We should have a list of Those who "Pack Heat" while Camping and where and when there going....SO WE CAN AVOID THEM!

Happy Trails

Len,
If I correctly deciphered your inference, then I assume you're a police officer. If you are, then I'd suggest you're foolish for "leaving it at home". You of all people know the bad people in the world. I don't appreciate anyone, much less a peace officer insulting someone exercising their rights to arm themselves. As I said; in normal everyday life, you'd never know I was armed. If the occasion ever came that you were made aware; I'd suggest that we'd both be grateful that I was. I'd also dare say that I personally practice with my weapons as much as you or any other peace officer. As I said: I carry daily because when seconds count, a police officer may be minutes away. And based on your post, there's a pretty good chance that when you arrived, you'd be unarmed anyway. Thanks for choosing the career path that you have. It takes a special person to devote their life to public service. And I'm grateful for your commitment.

That's a rather interesting attitude on your part. You're not the only person in the world who has carried weapons professionally at one time or another. The civilians whom I know who carry, do so for the same reason that you do -- as a last means of defence in the event of physical violence. Of course they're all legal permit holders -- that large group whom the state of Texas found were on the whole six times more law abiding than the general public, and infinintely more law-abiding than the low-lifes in whose mold you seem to be trying to cast them.
