Radio Suggestion.

Postby campmaster-k » Mon Nov 19, 2012 12:38 pm

I am looking to buy a portable am fm possibly sw radio to take on camping trip and to use in my garage. I want a really good one. Are there radios that are really better than others? I am will to pay more to get more. Its just seems like all the radios I end up with are crap. The GE super radio used to be good but they have gone the cheapo china way. Your suggestions are appreciated.

When I was a kid my dad had a Zenith Transoceanic, that one seemed to be better than the field.

I remember my grandfather having one. For that reason I have two. One works and one doesn't. But as far as what radio is best and to get. I can't help you because I haven't even found one yet, sorry.

Good luck finding anything that isn't garbage any more.
It's all about making it cheap so it doesn't last so you have to buy more. It's called consumerism, and we are all trapped in it one way or another.
Okay, my rant is over.

The thing is I just bought a little am fm from the hardware store. It cost about 15 bucks. It seems to work as good as any. If I buy say the c crane radio of the same size and duties is it going to be better or is it just more money?

This is a bit off topic, but could be handy....

Do you have a cell phone or MP3 player which also gets radio stations? I team mine with something like this http://www.amazon.com/X-Mini-II-Capsule-Speaker-Black/dp/B001UEBN42 which is the smaller than a tennis ball, but when popped open delivers a great sound. Obviously you'd have to think about charging both items, but just an alternate route for you. :M

I've been using a Kaito KA1103 for several years and it is the most sensitive receiver I've ever used. It rates as good or better than more expensive sets.

Thanks for the input fellas. So it seems that between the Ham people and the other sites I have visited that the 50 - 80 range will get you a better radio. I wonder if it the tuner itself that is better or will any cheapo tuner work better if it has a better antennae. Probably both.

For the price, this Sangean PR-D7 is a pretty good deal and has some nice features for camping and carrying around the shop. I think the reception is comparable to the CCRadio and the GESupertuner (both of which I have).

The good:

5 presets and digital tuning per band
Can charge rechargeable batteries (I have Sanyo Eneloops in mine and have used it up to a week without charging...no buying batteries, no looking for the cord)
Small size (about the size of a hardcover novel)
Good sound (but I prefer the CCRadio for AM talk radio)

The bad:

No handle for carrying

I have two I use.

I have this one. It is only AM-FM but it is solar powered The bigger speaker sound good for a picnic. You
wind a clock spring and as it unwinds it spins a gearing and electrical escapement ( gorner ) system that
charges a capacitor. The capacitor play the radio for a few second and then it unwinds a bit more. so
you’ll have to wind it again and again. It will play all day on a cloudy day with the small solar panel

Grundig FR200 Emergency Radio (eton / Grundig )
I keep this on in my TD now , but use to take it with my on deployments all over the world when I was in
the Air Force. It does not have solar and is missing dedicated weather bands. (Am FM and world band) Sound
is only good for “closer to you the better “ you can find then for $40 - $50 not the $134 MSRP.

http://www.etoncorp.com/product_card/?p ... tDbId=6276
Grundig makes some of the best shortwave radio out there. The Pro stuff not this little one.

The CC Solar Observer Radio (solar & hand crank) would be my choice to replace my Grundig Emergency
Radio. It has dedicated Weather channels and solar powered as well as crank, batteries, and AC power through a
brick adaptor. You can even charge some cell phones or PDA’s from it. It does not have world band ( AM FM Weather )
and I bet the sound is the same as my Grundig FR200.

The CCRadio-2 by C. Crane
If you got $150 extra bucks loot at this one.

I not sure about the CC-Radio internet wifi radio, but they seem to have all the stations you’ll ever need.
