AAA

Postby pete42 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 6:29 pm

As I stated in another post I signed up my GF for AAA
They offered one plan that had a 5 mile towing restriction; 5 miles that wouldn't even get her from one side of town to another.
If she broke down on the west side, where most shopping is done her garage repairman is on the easy side about 15 miles.
while that's not far across as towns go that's what her's is.

I went with the 100 tow mile plan and with that plan they threw in a free one for her mother, go figure.

I have a towing plan through my insurance, I have used it once and it worked; only difference is I have to pay at the time of the tow
where with AAA it's paid in advance.

I don't mind paying at the time of the tow I usually carry around $300 just for such things.

yea right if I had $300 I would sit up all night and watch it. :D

what towing plan do you have?

Put a sign on your car door that says, "Drivers carries no cash!"

Sorry I don't remember the details of the towing part of my insurance. :(

I was worried a little with the title of the post... I was wondering why you would brag about signing up your GF for Alcoholic Anonymous of America

We have the AAA premier with the RV option. Haven't had to use it for a break down or towing yet.

I was wonder what Goebel Fixtures (http://www.gf.com/)
had to do with American Anthropological Association (AAA) ( http://www.aaanet.org/ )
myself. Hahahaha

My Usaa insurance has my towing covered. I’ll have to check for towing of the trailer if something breaks
and I’m unable to tow it back home. Good question to ask my rep this week. Might have to check in to a
RV plan like Mary and Bob above

To add the RV plan on to our AAA membership was only $10 extra. But our yearly AAA membership is $200, we both are members. If we were always together only one of us would have to be a member because it covers whatever vehicle you are driving. I'm a Good Sam member too, and they are always trying to sell me a road service plan. First year is reasonable price, but after that it goes way up, which is in the fine print. Note that we have the highest AAA plan there is.

Bob,

I may well not understand the whole story, or master plan behind this insuance thing, but if you spend $200 a year for it, to save a towing bill that may run $150-$200 wouldn't it be cheaper to just pay the towing bill, if it ever came, once every 10 years or so?

Pete,

I don't have any "towing" insurance.
If one of our cars breaks down, I have it towed to a repair shop.
Usually happens once every 10 years.
That said, we are in a small/ medium sized city, about 15 miles max from one side to the other.
A tow here runs $125-$150

Rob, in our case it's one of those things that has gradually increased over the years, and I had to look it up to give that figure. I think my towing range is 125 miles, and there are many times we are out of that range. About 1000 miles out right now. Since I do most of my own repair work, I want my vehicles towed home. But it is the case of is the insurance worth the cost of it. AAA has other benefits too, most of them we don't use much I will admit!

Bob,

A thousand mile tow would get pretty pricy!

Rob
if it were just the tow charge that was covered I would not have gotten her coverage.
when you add in her peace of mind $113 isn't that much about $9.50 a month for one
since it also covers her mother the cost is about $4.25 apiece still not bad.

but not one I need for my own vehicles since I have a rider that repays me for towing.

I may be wrong I think RV coverage is included in her membership as well, but don't hold me to that.

That reminds me of a breakdown we had with the giant Teardrop on the way back from MO. We were in the middle of no where, and barely managed to get off the highway. We found a local garage, who welded up the spindle, and put a new hub on the Teardrop. We were back on the road within a few hours, and the cost was negligible; a bill or two if I recall.

If I would have had to call AAA I'm not sure how that would have panned out.

Hyundai tells me they have roadside assistance, just call and they will tow me in. Don't know, haven't tried it yet. The place I buy my tires from also does roadside assistance, max $50 for a tow. I have used that.

Oh, yeah, my insurance also has towing coverage, but it isn't as generous as Hyundai or my tire place!
