The Plan ... so far

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby GPW » Fri Mar 31, 2006 8:23 pm

Not to worry Ira!!! We're all in that same small boat ...hahahahaha
My somewhat unorthadox methods include obsessively over building everything ... I always go crazy for structure, and little "frills" ... so the extra inner framing is for just structural needs ...
I will have an airfoil shaped panel over my upper splices on the outside , the excuse being an awning mount , besides structural ... I'll have a similar smaller panel on the outside of the driver side rear , also at the splice ... my excuse , a flagpole mount ....I know it's gonna be heavy !!! The trailer weighs a ton and was made for a fairly large boat so my stuff won't be THAT heavy ... Trailer is 8' OAWx18'OAL... big boy huh ??? May have to cut it down later ...after the next hurricane season (It is primarily an escape pod/BUGOUT) Cabin/Galley is 74"x12' ....trying to keep all the weight aft too since the tongue weight's gonna' be killer on the old back , and truck ...

My Pal Bob came by today and we put the frame and floor together with the construction adhesive and 2" screws every 12"...Pics as soon as my battery is charged... or the sun comes up , whichever comes first

Floor frame / ply is DRY(74"x12') , so we turned it up on it's side (much stiffer ) and this AM , I'm going to coat the under side with roofing cement ... I know I won't be able to get the RC into everywhere, so I was going to spray some undercoat on to spot after the RC is dry ... anyone know if there's a compatability issue ???

What are you using for the coating? I used the Gardner's stuff from HD in the green can, and it brushes on easily wherever you want to apply it. No big deal at all.

Ira, used the Gardners red can ..wet or dry ... had to add a little mineral spirits so I could brush it on , otherwise would have to had used a trowell ...which I did do to force the thicker material into the seams between the frame and the floor ... took about 2 hours , my hand still aches , but it looks nice (well, for what it is ) and should offer a good bit of protection ...Way cheaper than spray undercoat that I used on my Silverado ...That's cool . and I'm still UNDER budget ... :)

If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what then is an empty desk a sign of ?(A. Einstein, I think - paraphrased).

Thusly, following that logic: What then is flakey tear paint a sign of?

(Never mind - the guys in white coats are here again...)

My wrists and arms were sore after slinging that thick goop. I guess you get used to it because it wasn't so bad when I put on a second coat.

Couldn't beat the price though , and I guess this stuff's been around long enough to prove itself ... it did make a nice undercoating ...I put it on with a swirl sorta' pattern ... looks as good as the bottom of a trailer can I guess???

Second coat ???? :o

What's the difference between that stuff and what I used? Mine went on real easy. Maybe yours is the better stuff.

I'll know what to look for if Flava insists I put on a second coat ... that red can stuff was fairly thick ...any larger job would have been a pain .... or a second coat ...The red can stuff says use their fabric(natch ) and trowel on to 1/8" thick ... Great on the roof , overkill on the bottom , eh ?

Still waiting on the welder .... Cabin parts (rear wall, cabs, shelves) are being laid out to cut ...will proceed with the sub assemblies till the trailer gets welded (now next week ) <2mos.

Already time enough to start working on the next 8' TD ... Have decided to build it as the Flash TD depicted in the ModernTD threads .... does away with that pesky rear hatch , expensive hurricane hinge, and all the attendant construction / sealing complexities , and with the right paint job , has all the retro charm of a Traditional TD , but much easier to build /operate , and mantain ...I know some of you Die-Hards are rolling over in your air mattresses , like a rotisserie about my Loyalties to the one design TD's , I don't mean to offend anyones sensibilities , I'm just an innovator , my nature ... but all two guys with back doors in the hall of fame can tell you of it's merits ... heard enough about those Hurricane hinges, and just sketching the actual layout of that hatch hinge thing is pretty much a PIA... Doomed to leakage !!! Just my opinion , don't get excited and throw rocks ... hahahahahaa

I wouldn't "insist" on putting on another coat. It's just had so much of the stuff left over that I didn't know what to do with it. I put on 2 coats and still have about half of a can left over. Maybe I should build another trailer?

Start buying parts now! You don't want that stuff to dry out.

Maybe it would be easier to drive up to Oregon to get a trailer to finish? Yeah right, I'm still trying to finish this one.

That one won't do you any good. It's already coated.
