Inverter generator on sale for $390

Postby David_L6 » Mon Dec 31, 2012 9:36 am

I don't know anything about this generator (yet - just ordered one) but for $390 I had to give it a try. Generators of this type are usually pricey. Just wanted to pass this along to the board in case someone is looking for a small generator.

This one did catch my interest until I started poking around the internet trying to find out more information about the Excel generators. I wasn't able to determine for sure the name of the company that makes the generators or the country where they are made (not a good sign). Also I came across some reviews on Amazon.com for the 2800 watt and 3300 watt Excel generators...all of which were bad. One person stated that he can't even find parts for his and the company was not standing behind the product. So buyer beware...I think this generator is too good to be true. I think if I get a generator it will be either a Honda or Yamaha.

Yamaha rocks! I've got a tri-fuel Yamaha and it does a wonderful job of running my AC and keeping my fridge cold. Yup, a little more money...but a strong dealer network and a name I know I can get parts for, priceless.

I got the tri-fuel Honda EU2000I.
Can't beat a brand name product.

I got a reverse engineered knock off water pump a few years ago. The price was a quarter of the name brand. It was poor quality, shook it's self to death. That is the last time I got a power anything that didn't come from a brick and mortar store. With Harbor Freight you can get a extended warranty and a place to take it back to. I would steer clear if I were you

IF you can't find any information about country of origin or name of company, you can bet it was made cheap, probably in China, only one large lot was produces and sold and there will be no parts or support...

Friend of mine had a similar "no name/no country" unit, it went bad unfortunately it took his $900 TV set along with it.... Now he has a very large door stop...

I thought of the same thing happening...unreliable voltage and spikes ruining everything plugged into it ...not to mention being electrocuted by the thing  I agree, it probably is made in China...and we all know how poorly their stuff is made

BTW...I just checked and the generator is now $599 and out of stock!

I agree - it's a gamble. It probably is made in China come to think of it. Almost impossible to find something like that that isn't made in China. I'd really like to have a Honda or Yamaha but I don't have the money right now... I'll try this one out when I get it and let y'all know how it does. Hopefully it won't take out anything I plug into it if it does go. I'll start with my old coffee maker and go from there.

Perhaps if you don't have money for more expensive unit in budget now... You will be money ahead to do without until a better money situation exists (savings fund)...

Personally there is not anything powered by electricity that really enhances the good old out doors.... Except something that may take batteries and plays some soothing music....

I picked up a 2000 watt CPE (brand) generator this summer for just under $500. Before I bought it I found every bit of information I could and found that even though it was made in china the company is based in Georgia (the state, not the country) and that parts and service are available and from reviews I read I found that the were very dependable. So far I have maybe 90-100 hours on mine so I can't really say how dependable they are yet but I did start it last weekend. It was stored in the back of my car and the temp was about 10 degrees and it hadn't been run since mid November, and it fired up in 3 pulls. It also is pretty fuel efficient when in econ mode and is super quiet.

I also use this generator in connection with a Unprintable Power Supply (UPS) to run $30,000 lasers but I did lots of testing at different loads to see how constant it is as well as got load/output logs from the company that makes them before I dared run a laser off it and even then I use the UPS as extra insurance.
