Mike, on my first Tear I used clear gloss epoxy and a final coal of Minwax Helmsman for UV protection. On the Slowmobile I used exterior polyurethane PAINT base without any color added. It does have a slight milky color on the mahogany. I did not use any stain. Just the base coat on mahogany and soft maple for the Woody sides. It cost me about 30 bucks to do that finish. There is still a sample board outside open to the elements since last spring that still looks pretty good. I plan on leaving it out all winter to see how it holds up. This "Base coat" finish was suggested on this forum back in 2011 by someone that was a paint expert. It is a softer finish but has held up well so far.

I don't know much about wood Mike.
But glad to here you are out there working instead of sitting on the couch getting fat and watching Football like I am.
Get some heat in your shop....even if it is just one small room. Life will become much easier.

Mike , it is the base before the color tint it added. So you need to buy it somewhere that mixes the colors not stocked colors off the shelf. When you open the can mine was milky colored, not clear. When you put it on it cleared up as it driedbut did show a slight milky color on the mahogany because that turned dark with the base coat on. You need to apply it at the same temperatures as any oil based paint.

MAKE SURE IF YOU DO THINS THE EXTERIOR POLYURETHANE PAINT BASE MUST BE OIL BASE!!!!!!
