Need tips on stretching my trailer!

My trailer floor is a frame made of square tubing with half inch plywood on top and bottom, insulated in the middle with foam insulation - here it is without the top added.

This sits on top of a trailer chassis from an old toy hauler. When I had the square tubing frame made, he made it smaller than I ordered. I'd intended it to be 1.5" wider so that the walls of the trailer would be closer to the wheels. Currently the wheels sit 3.5" out from where the trailer sides will be. I'd thought about just bolting a 2 x 4 on each side to widen the trailer and building the wall on top of it. It will add weight, but what can I do? What do you think? Any other suggestions? This picture shows the stage I'm at now:

Are you talking an 1.5" on each side? I extended mine out 6" on each side. Replace your top ply with another piece of 3/4" and cut it the width you want and then add a 2x2 under each side like you see in the second picture I provided.



PS: Most Big Box stores 2x2's are really 1 1/2 x 1 1/2

Yep - 1.5" on each side. That will still leave about 1.5" to 2" between the tires and the inside of the fenders against the trailer wall.

My camper extendes 5-1/2" on both sides and 6" on the back without any framing under it other than the 3/4" plywood. By the time you make a sandwich wall and attach it to the floor there's where your strength comes from unless you want room for floor insulation. Just bolted my plywood to the frame and let it hang over. Build the wall and attach it well to the floor and no sag etc..
