Thinking about selling my Teardrop?

Postby Visionsbydarrah » Tue Jan 15, 2013 10:49 am

Over the past six months or so, I've been playing with the idea of getting rid of the Teardrop and moving up to a Class B.

Any thoughts on this?

If a class B is what I think it is (a van that's a motorhome), then it's a great idea. I like to idea of not hooking up a trailer to my car, packing it to and beyond the roof, driving it a zillion kilometres across the continent, yanking all my stuff out of the trailer and car, camp for a few days, then pack it all in, then get home, unpack it all. My grandparents had one in the 70s when I was a kid. Somehow, they managed to stuff a kitchen, bed and all their stuff into a full-sized van.

I would consider something like that myself if I didn't have a mortgage to pay off. Used ones can be bought fairly affordably.

Gotta have somewhere to park it! It's a little bigger than the tear... But I love Class b's. Practical, affordable, and not TOO awful on petrol.

Go for it! Try to find someone who will care for your tear the way you have.
Those people that constantly need a pat on the back to feel proud of thier accomplishments typically don't go very far...

Thanks for the kind words... And yes its a van/mortorhome.

And as was mentioned the hooking it up and unhooking it does get a little old at times.

As far as needing somewhere to park it... Well it well take the parking space teardrop has now, so rooms not an issue. ( And no not I'm not saying the Van and my teardrop are the same size. I just have the room for it. )

I just think the Class B well fit more of my needs and maybe a few wants aswell at this point in time.

I've got a local RV dealer doing what they can, but B's are a rare thing here in Kansas.... But they do have one one there lot. ( It's a 2005 Roadtrek 190 Versatile. )
As of today just trying to work out some numbers there's and mine.

So here's to hoping the numbers come out right...

Class B:
Just bought some raffle tickets to a Trail Wagons Chinook Concourse XL - 2000 model (remember Y2K?) with 10,000 miles on it.
I was amazed at the ingenious use of space. It is a foot or two longer than a Suburban or a Ford Expedition so it would be easy to drive. It has a toilet, med sized refrigerator, little pantry, two captains chairs w/fold out table and a couch that converts to a double bed AND you can stand up in it, plus heat/ac, small water heater and the shell is all fiberglass.

found pictures w/floor plan of the same model here
Wasn't really aware of what Class B meant prior.
It has a V 10 engine (Ford), probably awful gas mileage; any guesses on what the mpg would be?

Now if only I could win this raffle......drawing is this Friday.

The really interesting part is the rapid depreciation; I mean warp speed. New in the year 2000, this rig (the one being raffled, which isn't quite as mint as the one in the link above) might have sold for $80,000 or more. Now, it is valued at about $17,000, a nice loss of $63,000 over 13 years......

Pat you might want to keep the tear drop and get the motorhome also. I have had a VW wesfalia for 25 years and will always have one. It is my daily driver. I am building a 4x8 teardrop/trailer so I can put everything I haul in the van back there. The van has a full kitchen but I never cook in it. I am going to take the kitchen out and put it in the trailer. Another reason the teardrop would be so nice is to carry kayaks and such on it. I might never sleep in the tear but it will always be there if I need it. I am also planning on having all my camping equipment stored in the tear. That way when the weekend comes I just hook up and off I go.
Anyway you go good luck.

Junebug, nice looking layout of the Chinook... Good luck with the raffle.
If I had to guess one mpg for it you might be looking at 10 in town and maybe 12 one the highway, but then again this is just a guess.
Unfortunately it seems all RV's have this problem not just the motorhomes. (Quick depreciation.)

Blackcatraceing,

Good idea, gives me more things to try and figure out....

my friend drives a f250 4X4 long bed with a cap she gets 18 to 20 mpg and the darn thing will run 75-80 allday
It gets better millage than my v8 f150 4x4

I too like class B's so if you think that's what you want go for it
I have camped in tents 1, pop-up's 2, vans 2, travel trailers 4 all were nice in their own way
the Vans made road side stops easy to stop and nap eat ect I like the sprinter if they didn't cost so much

Are you full timing it in that?

No.
I did that in a 1969 19 foot Shasta while paying child support. I never want to full time again.
The little cargo trailer behind the van was a 2008 Little Guy Silver Shadow that leaked and rotted.
Tore it apart and built this.

Ok, I heard back from my local RV dealer late in the day.
They can make the numbers come out so there doable.

So this coming Sunday I'm going to take the short two hour drive to test drive the van... And more then likely start the paper work one it.

When we bought our TT, I thought about selling my popup. My wife's analysis was, its paid for, we park it in the back yard, and the tags are $18 a year, so it cost us next to nothing to keep it. We still have it, and use it from time to time when someone wants to go camping with us.

been that way with class c , then a truck camper . the only problem was that if yo plan on leaving camp to explore the area , you are locket into packing up
and taking it all with you . the other option is to bike ride , but found that in western mass its not that easy .
i'ld keep the teardrop for a while ,unless your using it as a trade , in case you chnge your mind or use it for storage of extra camping stuff .
not to be confused with alexk from california
