northern tool trailers

Postby lee senn » Fri Dec 28, 2012 12:22 am

anyone have experience with the northern tool trailers. They look to be a cut above and they currently have their 5 x 8 trailer on sale for $449.00 with free freight. I have a trailer that I had custom built, many years ago, for my anticipated build but being a newbie I made so many goofs I fear that it will cost more to rectify them as to just by a suitable frame. Thanks for your help. Lee Senn

The single tongue ending just a foot or so into the second crossmember scares me.

In my 20 plus visits to gathering I have heard first hand twice about on the road tongue failuers.

Here is a post I made not quite a year ago.....

Hook up the frame and try backing it down a narrow alley or winding driveway. If this exercise make you want to pull your hair out , the tongue is just too damn short ! However lengthening it and attaching it at the same crossmember will further aggrivate your bending of the puney crossmember as you now have a longer lever to pry with. I have replaced , lengthened and reinforced the tongues on each and every one of the 4 builds I have constructed. I simply bolted the first one with grade 5 bolts. Andrew is correct drilling the crossmember further weakens it however if you are now running the new replacement tongue the full length of the trailer you are now sharing the down force load with 4 or more crossmembers. So the drilling is now doable as the down force is shared by multiple crossmembers. As a bonus you can shim down the rear of the tube and utilize it as a rear reciever for a bike rack. grill mount, rear cargo rack and other ideas. It seems the general concensus on the board is most stock trailer tongues are between 18 and 24 inches too short for good road manners.

If you really want to leave the stock tongue and have the floor help to contribute its strength you might concider a square bottomed "U" bolt or two thru the floor. Drill the holes thru the floor from underneath and then drop the u bolt or bolts in from above place the crossplate and install the nuts from underneath. This leave the smooth round rod under the mattress. I would add a shortl length of 1 1/2 to 2" flat stock to spread the concentrated load over the floor acting as a large "washer" to eliminate the crushing of the floor sheet goods

I used a Norco 5x8 ( very very similar to your NT 5x8 ) in the barn build. The second crossmember was bowed downward badly from overloading by the previous owner.
I immediatly purchased a length of 2x2x3/16 to replace it. After a time I found even that was not enough and was forced to truss the new member from underneath to avoid bending the new tongue ( now) at the first crossmember. Just my thoughts others will have ideas I am sure.

I built my last trailer, (the Slow Mobile) on that trailer. The tongue was extended to make room for a tongue box and 2 angle iron supports were put on as well.

not the best picture but you get the idea. I also added 15" wheels to it. In August I towed it 3300 miles to Wyoming and back without issues.

Thanks Woodbutcher for the really good photo of the northern tool trailer. Having seen it up close It appears that in order to accomodate my proposed plan I will be better served to bite the bullet and have revisions made to my original trailer. Thanks again for your input it was very helpful in making a decision. Lee

This is my frame. I designed and made it to be rugged as I will be cruising through some really rough country and lots of gravel roads covering many miles.

100767
This shows more of the construction. The outer frame is 2x3x1/8 RHS, the A frame is the same. Note that all the open ends of the RHS have been sealed.
The cross struts in the center of the frame are 2x2x1/8 angle steel. The "A" frame extends back from the front a distance of 52 inches and is welded to the front
and sides of the frame.
The frame itself is 5 feet by 10 feet. I designed the frame to be as stiff and twist resistant as possible without weighing a ton. I figure that a stiff frame will go
a long way to keeping the torsional loads off the woodwork and thus stop the joints from cracking or splitting or other awful things while out in the bush.
Just my thoughts on the subject.

Lee, none of the responses in this thread are talking about the NT trailer that is on sale. I bought that trailer for my weekender and I thought it was a very sturdy and well built trailer. The one on sale comes with C channel framing and a Y-frame for the hitch. Mine was rated 2,000 lbs gross and my build only weighed about half of that at 1,100 lbs so you've got a lot of room to build heavy or light. Check my build journal if you want to see some closeup details of the NT trailer your are talking about.

Larry Thank you, thank you.The trailer you used is exactly what I am looking for. I will be ordering one Monday and am really excited to finally get underway !! Might be helpful to others in making a trailer decision if you posted info and pics of your trailer in this thread ( if the administrator agrees it might even be a good sticky ). I feel like I was bogging down at this early stage and this will enable me to move forward: determining what revisions to make to my existing trailer and finding someone to make them at a reasonable price was a daunting task and had put a huge kink in the whole process. Thanks again Lee

So is it safe to say that the Northern Tool 5x8 trailer is a solid deal?

My only holdback is the wheel size. Can 15 inch wheels be directly installed?

The NT 5X8 that is currently on sale for $449 is a solid deal. However, I don't believe you can directly install 15" wheels. I looked at just moving up to 13" and it was going to be too tight. I'm OK with the looks and durability of the stock 12" tires for my intended use which doesn't include offroad. If you want the big tire look on this trailer you will probably have to get a longer axle.

I see that the NT 5x8 trailer is still on sale & I'd like to buy it & get started with my build, but my only reservation is the 45 MPH speed limit by the manufacturer . If there was ever a problem at highway speeds I'm concerned that the insurance company might not pay & if there were an accident involving personal injury , I dread the thought . How do teardrop builders deal with this ? Thanks for you input .

My NT trailer did not have any cautionary markings about 45 mph speed limits. The spare that I bought did have a "55 mph" sticker on the wheel. The tires themselves are simply marked "high speed". I've used these same Duro tires on my Harbor Freight trailers for years without any problems. I keep my speeds at 60 or less, but many forum members talk about running them on the interstate at 70 on a regular basis with no problems. Life is full of risk and if someone is going to sue you then they will sue you anyway. That is what insurance is for.

Sorry I'm late to the conversation but I bought the Northern Tool 5x8 trailer and it is very nice. Here is a picture of it assembled and there are a bunch more in my gallery.

Image

The wheels are 12" and to go bigger you will need to use a different axle. THhe tires are rated for 45 MPH but there are many people on this forum that have put many miles on them at 65 MPH.

This other pictures up top are older versions of the same trailer. If you use SketchUp I have a full model of the trailer available for you to use if your are interested.

Cheers,
Ryan

Thanks for all you input. I did go ahead and order the Northern Tool trailer. It came in and is now completely assembled in my garage. I am very pleased with the trailer and it appears to be, as I had hoped, a really stout little unit. I am also grateful for the towing speed comments as I was a little concerned about the low speed recommended. I don't usually tow above 65 mph so I will just check the hubs for heat occasionally and move on. Again thanks for all your help. Lee

Ryan Thanks so much for your input. I found the sketchup drawings of the trailer very helpful. I also perused your build and design and have snagged a few ideas for my build. Again thanks so much Lee
