How about a tiny house thought for the day........

You have to wonder about a goverment that precieves self sufficiency as a threat to society.


I had to read it a couple of times for it to fully sink in !

Each little step gets me more and more anxious to see it all trimmed out and the weather is standing flat in the way. I need to turn more inside and finish plumbing, electrical ,and insulation work but that portion of the build has become drudgery and the fun is gone.

I have gotta get some lights heat and maybe some tunes cranking a bit and make it a bit more like home. Perhaps getting it more homelike will offset the bitter cold and dark world it has become since the sun has forsaken us for old man winter.

Somehow the thought of crawling under the trailer thru the snow and ice and installing the black tank ~so I can install the toilet ~so I can install the floor~ so I can install the dividing walls ~and on and on, have proven to be a mental stop sign that is tough to wrestle with.

In the warm light of a summers morning there is no stopping me but as I get older (and wiser) the dark and cold has driven me in, to the warmth and comfort of my recliner by the wood stove. Here is where I set and beat myself up for being so damn lazy. It is like riding a tiny merry-go-round it is moving along and I am getting nowhere.

Each day puts me yet another day closer to summer weather and I can put in hours instead of minutes each day.

Hi Bob,

Don't beat yourself up for winter induced inactivity on the build !
Just treat it as a rest and recouperation period.

Just keep warm inside, and healthy, so that when the spring and
summer do come - as they surely will - you'll be able to get back it
fast and furious.

Meanwhile, do some "mental building" on it. That may help you sort out
any thing you need to in the meantime - or think of other approaches
that may be a better solution for a design problem you may have with it.

Remember - Masterpieces aren't made in a day !

Hey, Bob, it's hard to keep interest in outdoor stuff in the winter. And sometimes, even if it's your dream, that cold winter just sucks your energy away with the cold wind. If you stop to notice in the evenings now, the days are getting longer than they were last month. It was still light outside at 6 pm last night. But anyway, next month starts getting warmer, so you'll be able to make some outside work progress then. Like Mezmo says, do your mental work and dreaming now....BUT get ready for the big push in progress that comes with spring!

Over 1/3 of my tiny house is dedicated to the kitchen. I live to cook and really enjoy doing it when there are others to share with. I have given hours and hours of thought on how to pack a fully functioning modern kitchen in essentially two 2 foot by 6 foot runs and a 3 foot walk way. In the wall storage has been heavy on my mind. While not wanting to compromise the insulation effeciency I do need some of the wall cavity for storage. I have purchased some very nice wall cabinets and want to use them in the build. I have toyed with reinforcing these cabinets with a very solid backing of 5/8 plywood and hinging them to swing. The little cabinet behind the cabinet will still have some insulation (probably 1") then shelving for my blue ball jars I currently use for 15 or so powdered stocks from flour to cornmeal to coffee ect. These would be placed in the wall behind the now swinging cabinets for extra storage.



A poor drawing.... you might notice when framing the caboose the two 6' bays over the wheel wells were framed with 2x4 not 2x6 as the rest of the shell was. This was done simply to add 2" of depth so cabinets would not encroach fully into the room. While it is only 2 " that is 2 square feet of floor space I would not have had.

YEP MADE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE OTHER END 19 ' 11" AWAY



and then we added the observation platform just under 48 inches if memory serves me correctly.

I'm at 1598 pounds of lumber at this time. This does not including the frame.
With siding and rubber roof in place I will be at approx. 2504 pounds
The weight of the windows and doors will be offset somewhat by the sheathing and stud removal.

I am realistically thinking 5,000 pounds when livable.

Well the declutter process is in full swing. The leather 15 foot sectional and the big tv shelf unit was gone last week and the upright freezer left yesterday. No real progress on the caboose as I spent most of Saturday gathering 3 projection tv's doanted from my " free pickup" add on craigslist. I am removing the fresnel lenses from them for the gray water distilation project. The high temperatures generated by the fresnel lenses will greatly reduce the volume of grey water by "boiling" it down.

Let me see if I can find a link to some of the info that got me headed onto this project.

That is a very interesting concept I had original thought of using steam to boil the grey water down but your Fresnel lens idea might be worth taking a look at

Still beating up the real estate folks at the Indiana DOT regarding surplus property from road bed realignment. Here is my latest letter ( since writting the govenor )

I am looking to place the caboose tiny house on some property somewhere this spring. I have been working with all of you since the 1st week of May on the 2 properties here in Frankfort ( abandoned sr28 roadbed) with no results.

If there are other properties that I can consider, I will , as time is now of the essence. I would like to make an appointment to meet with you and see if there are any other options we might consider. Montgomery , Hendricks and Clinton counties are my 1st choices to locate abandoned ground but I am very open. I have just retired but am still working in the Frankfort area part time. Please advise me of a good time to meet with you. If there is someone better suited to help me please advise me and help me to get an audience if you could.
