Don't forget good old fashoned shellac. The benefit of shellac is that if you get scratches and such, you can just add more shellac and the new will "burn in" to the old and make a good repair. The poly finishes have more abrasion resistance, but if something does pierce the finish, there's no really good way to reapir other than strip and start over.
