Looking for homemade door profiles.

Postby BlackCatRacing » Sun Feb 03, 2013 8:40 pm

I have searched and found a few door profiles, but know there is more. I cut out of 3/4" plywood basically a 24"x36" door entrance. What is the best way to reuse these slabs as doors with a nice water tight seal? I already have a drip cap made.. Thanks for your help...

Thank you Ron. Pondering the "House type door" with a jam..

This is how I did my doors:

The outer weather seal has worked so well that I haven't installed the inner seal yet.

I used a router and template to cut out the door openings. The cut-outs became the doors.

What does your trailer profile look like, Patrick?

Aggie79 I like that profile and thank you for posting it.

Grant it is like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLHegP4VfDA but on a H/F trailer for now. I had the trailer and most of the material. I really like the look of a rounded teardrop but need space to haul two kayaks. I have taken a lot of pictures but shamefully am having trouble down sizing them to get them posted. I will figure it out soon.

That's a pretty simple shape for the door, Patrick, so trimming it with T-Molding on the door and Edge Molding around the door opening will be quite easy. A lot of folks who have used my formed offset door hinges have said that they stiffen the wall a tremendous amount, but the other advantage is that they set the door outwards 1/8" so that it seals evenly all the way around.

Clearances should be 3/8" on the hinge side and 1/4" on the non-hinge sides. If you plan on going with the "suicide"-style door shown in the video, then you should run Drip Molding not only over the top of the door, but also all the way down in front of the door to minimize any water from being driven in while pulling in the rain.

How thick will your doors & walls ultimately be?

About 1 1/4' to 1 1/2" inch if I insulate. I am intersted in the offset hindges and hardware.

Patrick!

I can't form my hinges for wall/door thicknesses of more than 1" ... but, it seems like you'll be framing with 3/4" timber? If that is the case, I can sell you an un-bent hinge and you can trim it to your wall/door thickness, and you can screw directly into the edge of the timber. Send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I will send you and e-mail with some drawings for reference. If you also include either a drawing of your door with dimensions, or just the dimensions of each straight line, I can work you up a quote for your needs.

Continued Good Luck, and as always ...
