honda 2000 tune up?

Postby jwhite » Mon Feb 04, 2013 4:46 pm

I ran my honda 2000 out of gas this weekend and when I got it running again it would only run with the choke on and would bog down when my heater would kick in.?
I am going to have to take it to have it fixed and I wonder if any small engine repair could do it or should I take it to camping world where they sell these at?
I know C-W will charge more than most places but I wonder if they are the best place to go to?
I bought it used and I was told it didn't have alot of hours on it from the person I bought it from and also wondered about changeing the oil and how often?
anyone had them serviced and the cost?
I am waiting before I call them?

I have one of these - make sure your gas fill cap's valve is ON

Engine switch ON
Gas cap valve ON

otherwise it doesn't run good ;)

Not sure what your talking about, I have a extended run tank and it has a screw valve that opens and closes should it be closed?
also should there be a inline filter in the hose?

the gas cap has to vent otherwise it doesn't run well ;)

don't ask how I know....

so engine switch on & gas cap vent to On (which is open)

You probably haven't added any gas stabilizer when you stored it and now the carb is gummed up. Its not that hard to clean out the carb, if you're handy.

I ran it with no problem but I though I had enough gas to run all night and it ran out, so I filled the both tanks and started it again but I have to run the it with the choke on full but it bogs down when a load is placed on it.
I think I am going to call a local place first before I go to camping world.?

You probably pulled all the gook at the bottom of the carb bowl through the jets and it needs to be cleaned. I would find a local shop before I went to Camping World. CW is usually the most expensive place around for things like that.

J,

I have the same generator. So far mine works fine but in doing research before buying it appears the Honda EU20001 is a bit too easily subject to gasoline gumming up the carb fuel jets and carb internal passages, especially after sitting with gas in the carb over the winter. You'll need to remove the carb soak it in carb cleaner and blow out the internal passages with high pressure air then reassemble the carb. If you're not comfortable doing that, any small engine repair store can do it or any authorized Honda repair station. The fact that it runs with the choke partially set bears witness to a carb internal fuel flow problem.

Thanks for the replies, I know now not to let it of run out of gas again, I did it before but there was no problems after I filled it and ran it again.
I would rather take it to a small business than to camping world or do it myself, and there is one near a gun club I go to.

Its ok to run it out of gas.. Infact I run all my stuff out of gas before I store it often.. Couple things to make sure of though.. Only put in clean gas.. Use a nice clean can and run it through the filter in the top of your generator.. Since you have an extended gas tank I'm not sure if your filter is still in the stock tank though. Might want to check that. The other thing once you get it all cleaned out be sure to run some stable in your fuel.. The new junk gas we have starts to separate in as little as 3 months. It doesn't tank long at all to get gel settling in the bottom of your tank.. Keep stable in it.

Suppose to change the oil every 100 hours I think.. I change mine MUCH more often. And since they have no hour meter your pretty much just guessing anyway. I pretty much go by how much fuel I run through it.. Its very easy and it holds very little oil.. Just poor it out and refill up to the threads on the drain plug..

I have run it out of gas before so I didn't think it was a problem,I bought new gas on the way down to the event I went to so I know that was fresh.
I called a guy that runs a small engine repair shop and he said it would cost 60.00 for him to go over it,so I am guessing that about half what camping world would charge me.
I watched a youtube video and it looks pretty simple to change the oil and clean the filter and if that was all I wanted to do I could do that, but I think it's the carb that needs looking at and would rather have someone that does this all the time do it?
I was going to ask him if I should have a in-line filter and if he says yes and it prevents this from happening again I will do it.?

I would start using Seafoam in your gas. Its a stabilizer and it cleans out the varnish if you have any. You might try it before you take it in, it cleared up my rough idle problem.

Thanks Bruce I almost thought about asking if there was something I should try that might clean it out, I would hate to spend 60.00 and all he did was use this sea foam and run it for a while?
where do you get this at I have never heard of it?
I guess I am lucky I have run this generator and had no problems.

I got mine at Advance Auto parts but I think most of the parts stores have it anymore. Here's more info about Seafoam and a Honda Generator that only runs with the choke on.

Seafoam is good stuff....used to dump a can in the tank of my 07 F-250 with the 6.0L, until I traded it for the Ram. I put a can in my 2010 Hemi Ram 1500 every couple of tanks...and use it in my Husky ZT mower. They all run like a dream.
