change Vs demand

Postby droid_ca » Tue Feb 05, 2013 9:43 am

When I first joined this site it was Steve Cox Lil' Gypsy trailer that led me here, then I aw the beauty of the TearDrop, all I knew is I wanted one it had to be big enough for myself and my parrot- now a few years latter I now longer have the parrot but instead I have 3 dogs so my size has to go up a little.....I'm just wondering how has your build changed or progressed over your needs in the past couple of years?

Mine keeps changing. That's why I haven't started building yet. What started out as wanting a modernistic/cub grew to a 2+2 then a compact and now is looking more like a 14' airstream. That has also required a change in material choice from a woody style to foam and canvas if I ever get settled on a design the wife can live with.

That is exactly why you should find your first love and get on with the build.
The more you over think it or change it the more camping experiences you will miss.

I see it sort of like waiting for the latest electronic gadget. There is always something "coming out soon" that you could wait for. You just need to pull the trigger based on your best guess at the time. Changes are for the second one!

so don't worry just build and get it to the camping stages then go camping and don't worry about finshing it!!!!!!!!!!

you never will finsh you will be on build 2 before long like me with years of unfinshed teardrop camping trips under your belt!!!!!!!!!!!!

slow

Yeah thanks for the encouraging words Slow I think I'll finish #2 before I finish #1, but I do want to take pride in my work and get it done right the first time so I'll just sit here and wait and keep finalizing my plans until I'm good and ready, I'm going to hire a friend of mine so we can get the main framing done in a day then we can discuss all the extras and who knows...I might trade him a puppy for some work...keep costs down

I often say "where you are today is not where you will be in the future" particularly when I see folks 'planning' on their electrical needs. Kind of like woodbutcher waiting for the latest electronic/electrical gadgets. We owned Mega-mini #1 and learned what did and did not work i.e. single galley hatch two doors... we now own #7 witha ll of those improvement and a whole lot besides, solar, gas point for the grill, shower point, LED lights, XM radio... It all works and plays well together. It is reaching close to perfection or as close as needs to be. Lots of electrical outlets for the toys and tools. The only major change I see in the future will be the addition of the air shocks once the bracket is redesigned.

The problem is that my first love is the cub/modernistic. And for me that is all I that would be needed to camp comfortably. But the wife wants (read that requires) a bathroom with a shower (not the pop up tent variety). Compound that with I'm a cheap SOB and that requires more than the standard amount of planning and thought. She thinks $50 grand for a trailer isn't that bad. I cringe at the thought. The truth is I get my camping fixes with the Scouts (until my son is no longer there). We may never get a workable compromise (unless I want to drop that $50 G). But then I guess I get to get a truck in that case. I just won't have any money left to go anywhere.

Double post deleted...at least I thought! Something strange is going on. When I made a post about how I don't waste time thinking about things...and instead get busy and do them...it posted twice. And when I edited the second post to remove the message, it also edited the first post. So now my original post is not there.

Yes, it was a lot of fun and I don't regret ever making the decision to build the trailer. Everyone who has seen it cannot believe that I made it...and except with some help putting up the sides and the rubber roof...I did it all myself. Having the trailer has opened up my vacation opportunities as I explore the western states. No longer do I have to rely on expensive motels each night and wonder if there will be any available. And no longer do I have to stick to a rigid schedule because I have reserved a motel a few hundred miles down the road. This summer I am going to Yellowstone. Without my trailer, this trip would have almost been out of the question because it is a high destination area and the motels are expensive and have to be reserved way in advance. I estimate that the cost of camping on my trip last summer was about what I would have paid for just one night in a nice motel.
