Hi Stumphugger
You must be very close to the guy that has the great yard full of metal sculpture one the left heading west just out of the park?

OH No!
Another off color topic to tiptoe around.
No comments from me on this one, as I have enough on my plate dealing with the hate mail over my dog comments.
Slow can take the heat for a while!!

stumphugger wrote:It isn't really a town, and I may have made a typo, I am 90 miles west of Yakima. The big city of Randle, WA, of which the "downtown" core is a grocery, tavern, restaurant, mini-mart, building with dentist and library, post office, and a coffee hut. You do have to slow down to 35mph to pass through...

To do any proper shopping, I must travel for an hour to the west. But I like it here. I live in the woods--in a place where city people come to get away and camp. When a tourist asks where the McDonalds is, the answer is "About 60 miles thataway."

There is a really nice (cozy) little restaurant/pub on the north side of 12 as you you come out of the park.
Is that Randle or Packwood?

I'm not sure, it sounds like you might have us confused with Ashford, which is on the highway that goes up to Mt. Rainier. Otherwise, there are a couple of ways to come out of that park and end up on highway 12. Packwood is east of Randle on 12. Randle is one of the places where you turn off to go to Mt St Helens--Windy Ridge. Have I caused more confusion?

Yes, we came out of the south entrance to Mt Rainer and I thought we were on 12??? Is there another hyw north of 12?
It was very pretty and we stopped for lunch at a very nice little restaurant before we came out of the trees and reached the flatlands.
Love that trip in an open car!
We are in Yakima every year for Aug. 1st and sometimes come home the "long way" over to the coast, then up to 20 and back to our valley.
I love to drive!

The best thing to do is go get a tag and put your cell phone and home phone number on it, Is Zoe micro chipped as that is another way of doing it as well ...hope this helps

The best thing to do is to keep your dog on a leash. :o

Gage is right. This dog is not just somebody you love. Thinking of Droid's dogs, specially trained dogs like those are very valuable and thieves know that. I doubt that the dog would end up as somebody's dinner; but, someone might try re-training the dog for Mexican Cartel duty or to use for stud service or.... There are so many things that could happen. A farmer could shoot at the loose dog, thinking the dog is a threat to his livestock/chickens, etc. Also, your dog might not be able to fend off two dogs attacking it; or a Rottweiler or worse. Even if someone came upon a lost dog, one never knows what might happen. Tags can become disconnected. Collars can come off. Other than your care to keep the dog safe and secured, that chip that you had injected is your best bet, hoping that it would end up in a shelter with a chip reader (many have them, now).

Well then you need to leash train your dog. Every state down here have leash laws. Which in part reads "All dogs must be on a leash at all times when out in public."
So tell me, if your dogs are never on a leash, how do you know when to pick up the poop that your dog drops? Or are you one of those that just turn your head and keep walking. If that's the case, stay out of California. That shouldn’t be a problem for you because everything is so much more expensive down here.

It is very rude of an owner to not pick up their dog's Droppings I always have a few bags with me at all times not just for my dogs but for other people to pick up after their dogs...I wish we would do what they do in Dubai when you get your pet they take a blood sample and keep it on file, if your dog leaves behind a present that you neglect to pick up you receive a $5000.00 fine...
In regards to the micro chip it is also a good idea to know what you number is, As a form of identification.
Sharon only one of my dogs would be off leash the other two get tied up

when angies dogs go on a trip they are in a cage in the car and they are on a leash and angie picks the poop up.

pure and simple. the dogs NEVER GET OFF THAT LEASH TILL THEY ARE AT angies house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my dogs only ride to the vet on a leash in the car and then only to check cows on another farm or ranch land.

other than that they DON"T GO TO TOWN and they don't ride 24/7 in a car.

and THEY DON"T GO CAMPING!

If conditions are very right, I will let my dog run around without a leash or lead on; but, I watch him and call him back if he goes or starts to go somewhere that might be a problem. I can count the number of times that he has been able to be off leash on one hand. If he is inside the tow vehicle or trailer, the leash is off. Other than that, he is normally on a lead or leash. However, he does get leashed walks regularly, probably at least 4 times a day or more. Laws aside, I feel that a dog is a family member, with a mental capacity similar to a small child; but, with a much bigger liability factor, should anything negative happen. As such, a dog must be supervised very carefully.

In most areas, there are leash laws; however there are very few laws about having to pick up dog poop; but, there should be. Yes, it is extremely rude to leave ones dog's poop lay and simply walk away. Rude and thoughtless owners are among the reasons that dogs are not allowed on many hiking trails.

On a positive note, at the 2010 IRG, my dog did his morning constitutional. Then he did a second constitutional, after I had already put the poo-bag in the trash. Having nothing to pick up the second with, I walked the dog back to the car and put him in it. Then, I got a second bag and went back and picked up the poo. Later in the day, a gentleman who was camped near the "incident" called me over than thanked me for doing that and awarded me an extra raffle ticket. I haven't forgotten that. :) Little considerations can mean a lot.

I didn't look at every page of this topic but I did a search for ticks and heartworm and didn't find anything. For dog owners this could be an important one, especially if you are in an area that doesn't usually have these problems. If you are coming to Northern California, before you come, be sure to get preventative medicine for heartworm and drops to help prevent fleas and ticks. Also, it is a good idea to start your pet on these medicines before your trip, especially if the dog has never had one of these preventative solutions. I have been told that sometimes a dog will react to these and should be watched for a day after ingestion or application, especially after giving a heartworm medicine. These particular preventative medicines are not required; but, any good dog owner will want to know to use them.
