Let me go on the edge here Len and guess - a 13' HiLander? If so, SWEET!

I don't really care for HiLanders, BUT, if a 1964, the first year for them, when the bump in the roof was small and behind the door, fell into my lap, I wouldn't turn it down. I think we have 2 members who have them. They are cute, in my opinion. I think a 13' HiLander would be just as cute!

I've got 2 Scotty "Type" builds this winter.

One is to finish up the 13' Hilander.

And the other Which is why I said "Scotty Type" is a "Woodie Bread loaf"

on a 69 HiLander Frame.

The exact floor plan as a HiLander but with a 54" rear Bed.

Happy Trails

Nancy saw lots of you photos on your site they look great. How many rear doors are there know out there now? Your rear door looks great. I still like mine with little restoration. It is like me old and tattered but still very functional

Rear Door Scottys - 8, I think, that are known. Including one moldering away in a field somewhere around Boone, NC, where, happenstance, the NSSO is holding a campout, probably Memorial weekend 2011. Same person I'm told has several vintage trailers moldering away in said field.

Scotty Emblem

Postby Rarin2go » Tue Sep 07, 2010 8:29 am

The emblem that Len spoke about can be found on the Serro Scotty Owners website under Nancy Kroes' 58 teardrop.

Nancy,
saw your rebuild of your jr. and noticed a small knotch in the new sides where the hatch would go. Can you explain a little about it. I'm building my first tear and need to keep it simple, so will do a straight hatch. I'd love some hints for keeping this dry. I'll be doing mine on a harbor 4x8, so compact! On another tract I say a beautiful tiny Scotty in Ct.. state park about 2years ago it looked all original red and white with the drop down floor but maybe 13'. Any ideas on what it was, and what's the age? Also how many where made and what they go for? Sorry, lots of questions, but I've always love the old Scotties and Shastas. Had one in Calf. but sold it when I moved worst move ever.

Hi Karen, I notched mine there only because I was using a later year method of construction. The original Scotty teardrop was simply 1/2" sides with 1/4" plywood over them - no support structure. It probably wasn't needed, but I wanted to add 110v wiring and through over the roof would be best. I cut my sides down by 3/4" back to that notch which is where the framing for the door hatch was. I then wrapped with the 1/4" plywood and on top of that added 1x framing. This also allowed me to add TekFoil insulation over the roof which should keep it cooler in the summer time.

As far as keeping your's dry, if you are using today's hinges, you should not have any problem. Suggest you contact Mark aka Frank Bear. He builds and sells teardrops and has all the stuff for them. The Scotty hatch hinge is definitely a weak point. I made some mods by adding some weather strip on the inside of it, but not sure that is going to keep it water tight. When I had it out for the first time, having heard friends who'd just finished a rebuild of another Scotty teardrop had water pouring into theirs from that hatch door hinge, I put low residue duct tape over the top part of the door frame and let it go over the hinge. Mine stayed dry. I just bought a 4' piece of a garage door bottom strip and will remove the screws from the top of the door frame and affix that there. It will overhang the hinge so any water should flow right over it. That is my theory anyway.

Mark's website is: http://teardroptrailerparts.com/ That is a picture of a 5x8' Scotty teardrop replica that Butch Starner built. Doors with opening windows on both sides. Very nice. We had it next to mine and it looks great. That is chrome siding. If you contact Mark, tell him Nancy in Delton recommended him! ;-)
