HF 6 ga jumper cable repurpose

Postby Shadow Catcher » Wed Feb 13, 2013 7:45 am

I have been wanting to add a set of jumper cables that attach to the trailer battery on the theory that if I have them I will not need them. The idea is that is that if weather is bad enough or trees dense enough that the solar panels can not bring the battery up, jumper cables from the TV will do the deed. Harbor Freight has a sale on 16' 6 ga jumper cables for $17.99. These appear to be genuinely 6 ga and are very flexible (fine strand wire).
When I wired the Morning star inverter I used some left over 8 ga wire which was very stiff and used Anderson Power Poles for the connections to the battery.
I cut three foot off of the new jumper cables added Power Pole connectors and copper battery lugs salvaged from the previous iteration and a couple of new ones, soldered it all up and I have a much more flexible assembly. The Anderson SB50 connectors are good to 50A.
So why did I not just use the battery posts and a conventional set of jumper cables (I have a set made of 00 welding cable)? The Lifeline battery has bolt terminals and there are a bunch of wires attached including the shunt for the Victron battery monitor, this inside a battery box with the two solar controllers mounted on top so not easy to get to.

Adding remote terminals such as these might make it all even easier?

I used Power Poles for most connections and this allows me to use the same, from the battery, connection for other purposes. I had considered using terminals but with stuff rattling around in the tongue box the risk of them coming uncovered and shorting a 150 AH battery was not appealing ;)

I understand!

I was really thinking that they might be mounted outside the battery box, in an easy to access location.

Slow/Mike There are a number of factors involved. I have a 10 ga line coming from the TV battery through the trailer plug but this only works when towing or hooked up and running, and the current to the battery is limited to less than it can absorb in a given amount of time, again not a problem if you are traveling.
We will be sitting on the beach of Agawa Bay in Canada for eight days this summer. I designed the solar system for just this sort of situation and my expectation is that with 325 watts we will need nothing else. However we have camped in this park for 14 years in tents, and Lake Superior generates it's own weather, some of it nasty, (the Edmund Fitzgerald went down not too far from the park). The rear tarp was designed with exactly this in mind, one end can be lowered to the ground to shed wind and rain.
The 150 AH Lifeline battery has no upper limit to charging rate and will accept a charge at 20% faster than a conventional deep cycle (low internal resistance).
Our Subaru uses about a half gallon per hour on idle and at about $5 a gallon Canadian it gets expensive fast, therefore the idea is that If I have to use the car to boost the battery I do not want to idle it any longer than I absolutely have to.
I did not want to take a generator with us and one of the neat things is that the Provincial Park has designated this as a no radio camping area, meaning no amplified music/noise. We will be able to listen to music in the evening inside Compass Rose as you can't really hear it outside (one of the arguments for insulation) quiet from within or without, should we want to. Listening to the lake is for the most part music enough.
