Teardrop Tanker Trailer!

Postby angib » Wed Apr 05, 2006 5:51 am

This is a repost from the Fiberglass RV forum (thanks Diane Trotter). This astonishing teardop tanker trailer is in the Balboa Car Museum in San Diego. It was built to hold 230 gallons of gas, 15 gallons of oil and 30 gallons of water, to supply a modified Cadillac on a non-stop out-and-back crossing of the US:

The rest of the photos include the museum's information board and a still from a video of the in-motion wheel-changing apparatus!

Incidentally, the washing machine built into the car replaced a chemical toilet that had been fitted in this location, but had been rejected by the owner's wife as being 'too public'.....

Surely there's more in there than just a bed!?!?

The tension between what is good enough and what is beyond that creates the space for character to become our work.

I've been to that museum! The video of them changing a flat on the go was absolutely crazy. I can't imagine why somebody would want to do that...

Oh yeah... the rest of the museum was pretty interesting too

I can't find a pic but I remember seeing it in the Air and Space Museum. There was an endurance flight of some sort, they showed guys working on the engine While Flying!

I saw a documentary on that some time ago and they actually had footage on them changing the tire on the move. It was quite a setup.

Have a good day.

Can you say, "Rube Goldberg"? Still, pretty ingenious.

Here it is, I pulled this from a Smithsonian web page. These guys were one of the first to do in-flight-refueling.

Image

In 1935 this Curtiss Robin established a world record for sustained flight, using air-to-air refueling. After two unsuccessful attempts the year before, Fred and Algene Key took Ole Miss up from Meridian, Mississippi, on June 4 and did not touch ground again until July 1, for a total time in the air of 653 hours and 34 minutes, or 27 days. During the flight, the Keys received fuel and supplies 432 times from another aircraft. They braved severe thunderstorms and an electrical fire in the cabin before returning to a safe landing at Meridian.

The Curtiss Robin series was produced in the late 1920s and early 1930s as a three-place general aviation aircraft. Ole Miss varies from a typical Curtiss Robin by virtue of modifications made for the flight, including a new fuel tank, engine servicing catwalk, and a sliding top hatch for receiving supplies in flight.

See, I don't lay awake at night trying to figure out how I'm going to get at you the next day. No matter what George tells you.
